Mermaids
of the Sea
Teach me to hear the mermaids singing . . .
John Donne
Mermaids have long
captured the fancy of humans,
from the earliest Greek sailors exploring
the seas, to
the Vikings roaming the oceans, to the pirates of
yesteryear, to the poets of today. Mermaids have been
familiar
icons in almost every culture that has access
to an ocean.
What is their mysterious enchantment that makes us
cherish their image,
want to believe in them, look for
them in deep waters even when our
minds know they
won't be found? Why are there mermaid stories all
over
our planet Earth, mermaid statues, mermaid songs,
mermaid movies,
mermaid web sites? Perhaps we are
closer to them than science
likes to believe. Perhaps, just
like brownes and fairies and
elves and goblins and trolls
and angels, mermaids have literally
existed and that is
precisely why their images and stories are all over
the
globe and in all cultures.
This web site takes a look at the history, myth, and reality
of
mermaids. It also includes the jokes, the movies, the
poems, the
songs about mermaids.
Have fun, think miracles, and
be sure to let me know
of any other
mermaid sources on the web so I can link to
them! E-mail me at
