Class Description:

This course is the second section in an  Introductory series dedicated to the concepts of Data Communications for Business. The overall goals and intent of this course is to introduce the students to the basic concepts of data communications as applied to business networks. The major instructional areas will be network data transfer services used in business, the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) model, network architecture, devices and circuits, data transport using the various methods of delivery, network topology, design, management and security.
Students will become familiar with the basic concepts of data communication used in networks.  Topics will also include modems, multiplexers, interfaces and error detection and correction.  Students will have the opportunity to configure a network for use in a WAN.  Network protocols discussed will include TCP/IP and Novell's IPX/SPX. Prerequisite: IT 221 Basic Networking concepts

The purpose of this course is two fold.  Students have the opportunity to explore the business side of data as well as the technical aspects of data communications.  Emphasis should be placed on how data is transferred and the configuration of LANs and WANs. Students will not actually put together a WAN, but instead will design a potential WAN through a case study and group research projects.
