Gold Dragons
These golden beauties are the largest and one of the rarest on all Pern, ranging in size from thirty-eight to forty-two meters. During a hatching, they choose females who possess good leadership qualities; a woman destined to take on the responsibilities of being Weyrwoman. While fighting thread, these creatures fly in the lower levels to vanquish any thread that escaped the others; their riders must wield flamethrowers so these dragons can continue to mate and clutch successfully. A bronze, or on rare occasions, a wily brown will catch the gold in order to end her mating flight. Typically, clutches of ten to sixteen eggs will result.

Bronze Dragons
These mighty creatures are the largest and most powerful of the male dragons, ranging in length from thirty-five and forty meters. Typically, these dragons will fly the queens to produce the best clutches, although under certain circumstances, they have been known to fly smaller females as well. Naturally, the man whose dragon manages to fly the queen earns himself the title Weyrleader, and of course the various responsibilities that accompany it. Bronze dragons are able to chew firestone to combat thread, their riders must simply keep the rock handy during the flight to constantly replenish their beast's second stomach. During a hatching, these creatures are known to choose males who are, like themselves, strong-willed leaders. It is also considered good fortune for a bronze to hatch first.

Brown Dragons
Not unlike their larger brothers, browns impress only males, although they are considered the most dependable of dragons. These creatures usually grow to approximately thirty-five meters in length, causing them to be more agile than their larger kin. They tend to fly smaller dragons, but have been known to persevere long enough to catch a queen from time to time. Like bronzes, these beasts chew firestone while battling thread, so their riders merely need to carry extra bags of the stone during the fight.

Scarlet Dragons
A bizarre genetic mutation first introduced these deep red beauties to Pern one turn ago, baffling an entire planet. Now they are known for their grace and poise, albeit their crimson hide has earned them the connotation of being short-tempered. In size they rival the smallest of the browns, although they are more graceful than their male counterparts. These dragons impress only females and are able to produce small clutches of approximately five eggs once in a lifetime, usually sired by a blue or brown dragon.

Blue Dragons
Unlike all of the previous dragons, these sapphire-hued creatures are able to impress both males and females. They are determined beasts who generally do not mind following orders and will work hard to whatever end. While their ability to endure a task over a period of time is considerably less than that of a bronze or brown, the blue easily compensates by possessing amazing agility and speed. During Threadfall, they too consume firestone to produce long gouts of flame, their lithe bodies allowing them to evade the silver menace more easily. These dragons can easily capture the smaller dragons in flight, although the most determined have been known to capture a scarlet on rare occasions.

Green Dragons
Possessing hide the brilliant hue of emeralds, these dainty females are the most abundant dragons on Pern. Like their blue brothers, they are able to impress males and females alike, and have earned a reputation for being rather flirtatious. Unlike the other females, greens are unable to produce clutches, but they certainly do rise. As far as dragons go, these beasts are rather small, only obtaining sizes of up to twenty-four meters in length. They are extremely lithe and agile, making them perfect for decimating the ranks of thread that fall upon Pern with each pass of the Red Star. Greens chew firestone, although produce smaller gouts of flame than the others (a lack easily compensated for by their superior agility).

White Dragons
These albino creatures are the smallest of all the dragons, able to reach only twenty meters in length when mature. Unlike every other dragon, they have been known to be male or female, although they always impress a rider of the same gender. These beasts are extremely rare, usually occurring only once in each queen's lifetime. Their size also allows them to be the swiftest of all dragons, although they cannot fly for extended periods of time. Like the greens, the females do rise, but are unable to clutch. The males, on the other hand, are able to fly greens as well as other whites. Both males and females chew firestone during threadfall, although often they are forced to trade off part of the way through the arduous fall as they tire easily.
