The KLR was originally red, silver and black. The previous owner had
sprayed the entire bike red. This was not a concern for me, as I
planned to paint my KLR olive and black. Purchased at Crossroads Yamaha in Albemarle, NC. 18,644 miles 1-11-2010. | This is what the KLR looks like 2 months after I brought it home. I painted the panels olive and black using Krylon Fusion paint. I used the same paint to paint the forks, swingarm and parts of the frame black. |
With all the covers off, I decided to do a few upgrades instead of just changing the oil. I rewired the heated grips and added auxilary lights to the front fender, replaced the previous owners LED turn signals with the OEM signal lights from my '04 GSXR 600. I plan the replace the bulbs in the housing with LED replacements. I remounted the license plate and used mounting bolts with LED's built in. I replaced the dash lights (except the blinker) with inverted cone LED's. I installed a switched power port box that has dual 12V ports and dual USB ports and I also added a constant 12V power port near the battery. The previous owner had removed the end cap on the muffler so I made a replacement tip to cut down on the noise. You can view some of these upgrades on the KLR Mods page. | |
2-18-2010. I stripped the bike of all covers and removed the wheels for new Michelin tires to be mounted. I cleaned up the previous heated grip wiring and added another switched power wire behind the dash for my accessories. | 3-20-2010. Here is a shot of me as I return from a brief test ride. My
wife and I then took the KLR for an hour long ride for it's first trip
since I purchased it. NOTE: The skid plate has not been reinstalled in this photo. I notched the left side to allow access to the "DooHickey" adjustement bolt without having to remove the skid plate. I also elongated the drain plug access hole as clearance was too close the the drain plug. |
