A fifteen-year-old today probably doesn't have vivid memories of 1983, when New Edition first hit the scene with "Candy Girl." But those just a little older will remember well (a little too well, perhaps?) the fresh-faced teens and their correspondingly high voices... New Edition first formed in the early '80's when they were in junior high together in Boston's Roxbury district... Ralph Tresvant did most of the singing, backed by the rest of the original New Edition line-up... Having trouble remembering who's who? Let us refresh your memory..
Bobby Brown, though, wasn't satisfied with being just one of the guys, so he left the group in 1986 to pursue a solo career, which was successful to the tune of eight million albums sold and a Grammy... But New Edition wasn't lost without him... A new member, Johnny Gill, joined the band, and they continued to find success both as a group and individually... But that was most definitely then, and this is definitely now...
Home Again, the band's reunion album, features all six New Edition members: Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant... "The record feels like us," Ralph says. "It's more than just a collection of grooves... New Edition was all about songs and group participation, and this record has all that."
"I think it starts out Bobby Brown-style," Mike told MTV. "And it goes to the Ricky Bell-style and it goes back to Johnny Gill and to Ralph and to Ron and to myself, and I think each one of our personalities come out when we're doing our part."
"Home Again" debuted at the top of the albums chart, and the group is also taking its live show on the road... Their latest successes, however, are just part of New Edition's rather lofty long-term goals... "We want to be mentioned," Ronnie explains, "along with names like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson... Until we're mentioned in the same sentence with some of the people like that, then our job is not done. We're still striving."
