Atlanta History

Atlanta, Louisiana a small rural community, located in the southern part of Winn Parish. The original settlers came by covered wagon in 1858. A few of the first are, and they may not be in order......Colliers from Georgia (hence the name) being the first, Fugerson from Florida the second and then Durhams, Webbs, and Greshams. (The latter two being my families comeing here form Alabama) .

The 1870's ,80's, and 90's was booming, the new school, nothing like it around. Jim Webb started a cotten gin , saw mill, and then went into logging. The 1900's brought big changes, the Germaine-Boyd Lumber Co. a large sawmill and it revolutionized the whole area. The Lewis Store, the post office, the Atlanta Baptist , Sardis Baptist and the Methodist and Bethlehem , the two Furgerson Hotels, the L.R.&N. Railroad Stations were bursting at the seams. Many sawmills sprang up. A thriving mill town with the makings to become a sleek little town. By 1925 what could have been was no more. Our timber gone, one by one the sawmills left and then followed a steady stream of people leaving to find work. Some large Timber companies have bought up much of the land, reforesting so now we have an economic future. We are hardly on the map, Our pop. is 120 (city limits) Our school enrollment is 307 and our churches active enrolls are about 230. But as you can see, we havent lost our pride.

Atlanta School History

The 1870's brought changes to Atlanta, Louisiana, one being a Male And Female Institute .This school kept us on the map during the great exodus. The present modern high school stands where the old college once stood. The Atlanta School began with a 2 story frame building with one long room on the ground floor equipped with wooden beanches for seats. The upper story was one large room and one small room which was used for the smaller music room. This Institute was placed under the control of the State Superintendent of Education and State Board of Education, and represented by a legally imcorporated Board of Trustees by an act of the Legislature April of 1886. In 1889 when Joseph Paul was appointed principal there were 150 pupils enrolled. Opening in September, 1890 session, with a principal and two teachers.A thorough business and classical education could be obtained . Atlanta was the third high school as early as 1908 but was not accredited as a state approved high school until the end of the 1916-17 session when two graduated, Velma McElroy and Cassius Ferguson. The 1900 's saw a decline of enrollment , but by 1911 it had grown enough there was a need for a new two-story building. It was one of the best and most beautiful of its kind. In 1929 another all purpose one stroy brick building was constructed which is still in use today , at a cost of 30,0000 dollars. By the year of 1983 we have had near 50 principals, 3 of these have been women. The first was Mrs.Paymont 1896-97 and then Mattie Dorman in 1905-07. Our present principal is Mrs.Barbara Rudd for the session of 1999-2000. We wish her the best.

(history dateing back to 1888)

I sometime over do it, my brag books runth over. I think you may have to leave to appreciate where you have been. Just as being lost lets you appreciate being saved. So often people I met (in my early years before genealogy became so popular) were lucky to know one grand parents and where they lived. Both my parents are form Winn parish, both are at are near the original homeplaces. Homesteaded and deeded back in the late 1800's, links to the Gresham and Allen trees will be availible soon.

Do you remember any stories?Would you like to see something added.
