25 year old Kaylee Michaels blew off the dusted book jacket of her old yearbook, and
looked at the now yellowish cover. Class of 1998/1999 it read. “That seems so long ago,”
Kaylee said aloud to herself. She pushed away the old boxes that were around her,
engrossed with the hard covered book.
It was late August, 2010, and Kaylee was tidying up her attic, which was in desperate
need of cleaning. Big, old brown boxes we’re scattered everywhere, but Kaylee didn’t
care about the mess anymore. She was too busy staring at the yearbook. She remembered
those years in High School like it was yesterday. She flipped through the glossy pages,
until she came upon her class picture. She was in the middle row, her arms around the
boy standing beside her. Suddenly, the memories rushed back to her, sending her off into
her own world.
“And smile!” The photographer said. 14 year old Kaylee threw her arms around her
boyfriend, Taylor, and smiled when the flash went off. She was still smiling after the
photographer started putting his camera away. Her life was perfect this year. She had
great parents, awesome friends, and the sweetest boyfriend anyone could ask for. Taylor
came up behind Kaylee, and entwined his hands in hers, lacing them in and out. Kaylee
smiled, and hugged him, but quickly broke away from him when the teacher sent them a
warning glance. Public Display of Affection wasn’t allowed at Moorehouse High School,
and Kaylee and Taylor had gotten in trouble for it more than enough times.
“Looks like she’s ‘gonna kill us!” Kaylee whispered into Taylor’s ear.
Taylor laughed. “She probably would if there weren’t thirty other students in the room,”
he replied. Kaylee smiled, and took her hand away from Taylor’s, sitting down at her
desk. Taylor sat on top of it, and they talked, until the photographer left. There was only
five minutes of school left, but Mrs. Doherty refused to let the students out early. Almost
every student at Moorehouse High despised Mrs. Doherty, because she was so bitter
towards everyone. She was in her late sixties, and she had a scratchy voice, that made
Kaylee cringe every time she heard it. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the
final bell rang, and Kaylee grabbed Taylor’s hand, pulling him out until the hallway. She
stopped at her locker, and grabbed her book bag, then waited for Taylor to get his. The
walked out of the school, hand-in-hand, walking into the bright sunlight.
Kaylee yawned. It had been a long day, but finally school was over, and she was ready
for the weekend to come.
“So,” Kaylee said mischievously, “What are you doing this weekend?”
Taylor raised his eyebrows. “Nothing, yet,” he said with a smile. “Why, what did you
have in mind?”
Kaylee turned so she was facing him, walking backwards. “Well, Brock and Julie were
going to go to the dance tonight at the school,” she said, referring to their best friends,
who were also dating. “They said it should be really fun. Did you want to go?”
Taylor shrugged. “Why not? Just make sure you wear something revealing,” he said
winking.
Kaylee laughed, and swatted his shoulder, knowing he was kidding around. “In your
dreams.”
“Hey now, no need to get violent,” he said but his eyes were smiling, as he pulled her
into a hug.
They hadn’t been going together for very long; Just about about three weeks, but already
they had an amazing bond, that let them get through the hardest things together. Kaylee
and Julie had gone to a party, while Brock had brought Taylor. Their plan was to set the
two up. At first they had fought like cats and dogs, but eventually they realized how they
really felt, and had been inseparable since. They started off slowly, as friends, and then
eventually it became more.
Kaylee pulled away, and took his hand, as they started walking again. “Well, it’s a
formal dance, so you’ll have to dress up a little,” she said, grinning.
“Sure, no problem. I guess it will be worth it; if its a formal, than you’ll have to get
dressed up too.”
“I’m going to the mall after school to get something to wear, with Julie. I saw something
I liked there last week.”
Taylor’s eyes danced with curiocity. “What’s it look like?”
Kaylee stopped as they approached her house. “You’ll just have to wait and see!” She
reached up and gave him a small kiss on the cheek, and then walked through the door,
leaving Taylor standing on her front steps.
Kaylee grinned with happiness. She was so lucky to have Taylor in her life. Since her
father died two years ago, on the job as a Police Man, from a gunshot to the head, she
thought she would never be happy again.
Flopping on her stomach on the sofa, she sighed, but put the thoughts of her father in the
back of her head. Picking up the telephone, she rolled on her back, and dialed Julie’s
number. She picked up on the first ring.
“Hello?” Julie asked, breathless.
“Hey Jules, ready to go?”
“Yeah, I just got in the door. I am going to grab something to eat, so just walk over here
and I should be done by the time you get here.”
“O.K, see ya.”
Kaylee fixed her hair in the mirror, grabbed a sweater, and headed out the door. It took
her about five minutes to reach Julie’s house, and once she did, she opened the door and
walked inside. “Jules?”
She heard a faint reply coming from upstairs, so she flung open the door to her room,
and found Julie there, brushing her teeth.
“Come on, hurry up!”
“Jusht a minist,” she said though a mouthful of toothpaste. Rushing to the bathroom, she
heard the water running, and then Julie bounded back into the room. “OK, ready. We
shouldn’t be too long right? I already know what I want to buy!”
“Yeah me too, so what are we waiting for? Lets go!”
