With blurry vision, Briten Wilcox took off for the woods in her back yard, her emotions taking
controal of her actions. Swiping her hand across her eyes, she ran over the rocks and twigs that
were upon the ground, not caring that her bare feet were getting cut and bruised.
As she ran, her thoughts kept going back to the conversation held with the doctor just hours
before. "It can't be true," Briten muttered to herself. "It just can't be, I won't believe it. I'm not
as sick as they say."
But even though she was saying the words, she knew she didn't mean it. Her doctor rarely
misinterperated x-rays and tests. She didn't want to believe the words Dr. Keirsted had sadly
uttered to her when she was sitting in the waiting room, nervously trying to act calm.
"I'm sorry, Briten, but you've got Lukemia."
