Phantom Hitchhikers

Phantom Hitchhiker

Phantom Hitchhikers have become somewhat of a more common occurrence in the late 90's. Supposedly they are spirits of those who have fallen victim to automobile tragedies, spirits that haunt that very location where they were killed. Many reports have come forward, claiming that a hitchhiker was picked up around an area where a fatal accident occurred, only for the hitchhiker to disappear from the vehicle just down the road. Some instances involve many fatal accidents on the same stretch of highway where phantom hitchhikers are known to appear.

One case involves a young girl, known only as Resurrection Mary. She was supposedly killed as the result of being struck by an automobile on a hitchhike home, after being dropped off by her boyfriend due to a quarrel. Five years afterwards, her apparition began to appear, asking motorists for a ride to the ballroom, or the cemetery. She would disappear from the vehicle halfway down the road. Another case took place in Cape Province, South Africa. An army Corporal offered a young woman a lift home on his motorbike. He gave her a helmet and an earpiece to listen to the radio to on the way. Ten miles down the road, his back tire spun out, and so he stopped to see whether or not he had a flat. When he turned around, the young girl was gone. She could not have fallen off, for the helmet was tied to the passenger seat, and the radio earpiece was in his left ear.

Cases of Phantom Hitchhikers continue to rise. One small town even has a road sign with the figure of a ghost to warn motorists of a phantom hitchhiker that has been reported to have caused many accidents in the area, some fatal. The cases seem to take place heavily in Australia and South Africa, as well as the western United States. But every country has its own Phantom Hitchhiker, and as time goes by, their numbers will rise.
