Chapter 3

Charleston, South Carolina-1910

Alivia angrily turned on her heel not being able to bear the sight much longer. Isabella, one of her best
friends had stolen her boyfriend right out from under her. How could she do that to her? Alivia loved Justin, she sure as hell was sure Justin didn't love Isabella.

"Her damn glitz and glamor" She muttered nastily. And her attitude towards me is sickening. She acts like she's still my best friend. ugh, it really sickens me.  Inviting me to her wedding. Alivia could see her reflection in the pool of water just outside the church. She looked a mess, not that it mattered anymore to her.

She stared up at the sky and as the happy bride and groom came happily out of the church she vowed
vengeance against Isabella. No matter what it would take, she'd make sure she brought down Isabella and
her two disgusting sisters.

Alivia went home that afternoon and sat down in her sitting room thinking of how she could repay Isabella the type of kindness she had bestowed upon her. Netty the maid entered at that moment with a tray of tea and cookies.

"Miss" she said setting the tray down in front of Alivia. Alivia smiled up at her and Netty bowed before she left. Alivia stared at the polished tray, an idea forming in her head. Quickly rising from her seat, she called Netty back in.

"Netty, I shall't be eating now. I'm going out, tell mother I've gone and should be back within the hour.
Oh, and tell Jimmy to bring the carriage around."

Netty bowed and scurried out of the room. Alivia pulled on her gloves and put her hat on as she went
out the door. She wrinkled her nose as she went out into the street. It smelled of gasoline and exauste.  Even though automobiles had been around a few years now, Alivia still couldn't stand them. Disgusted, she
said to no one in particular, "These new inventions are truly revolting."

Alivia shrugged and climbed into her waiting carriage. She gave her driver Jimmy an address and sat
back to finish formulating her plan. Within ten minutes they arrived at an exquisite mansion just along the city lines. The luminous place stared down at Alivia with all its dark splendor. She quickly walked up to the door. And knocked using the large heavy knocker. A handsome looking butler opened the door and led her in.

"Whom shall I say is calling?" He asked.

Alivia felt herself blush at his accent as she thought things young girls shouldn't think. "Miss Alivia Johnson."

He bowed and walked into what Alivia guessed was a parlor. He returned a moment later and ushered her into a large room full of grandeur.  Alivia walked awkwardly across the room and sat on the edge of the sofa, nervousness apparent on her homely features. She wasn't the prettiest girl around, but she wasn't the ugliest. She knew that this person was the one person who may be able to help her.

A tall young woman in her late twenties entered the room.  Alivia looked up to see if this was the person she desired. It was. "Ms. Claudia I presume?"

"You presume correctly. How did you hear about us Alivia?"

"Through a friend. He told me that you could help me with my appearance and a few other things."

"We do help people like you Alivia," She stopped and turned to her with a serious death like stare, "For a price."

"A price, of course yes. Just tell me what you can do."

Claudia sat next to Alivia on the sofa and looked her over extensively.  Alivia stared at her eagerly. She had everything that Alivia wished to be. Cream colored skin big black eyes and long black hair. Most of all Claudia had confidence-something that Alivia had never possessed.

"You see Alivia the answer to your problem is quite simple."

        "Is it going to hurt?"

Claudia laughed. "Goodness no! The process is quite painless. Now tell me Alivia, exactly how much are you willing to pay to be beautiful enough to get your revenge on your friend Isabella?"

        Alivia gasped, "How did you-"

"That is not the question dear." Claudia repeated her question, this time more sternly. "How much are you willing to pay?"

        "Anything. Ask your price."

Claudia smiled and got up from the sofa. She began to walk down across the room. She stopped when she realized that Alivia wasn't following her. She turned her top half around to face her. "Come. Follow me."

Alivia gulped feeling stupid for being afraid and slowly she followed Claudia's slim figure. When they
got to a hall near the back of the house, Claudia stopped. She stood outside a door, "Are you sure that you want this, once you go, you can't return."

"What's that supposed to mean? And of course I want it. Don't be silly."

Claudia smiled and opened the door. The room was lit by candle light and was windowless. In the center of the room was a great stone fountain. Alivia followed Claudia into the room in awe-of what she did not know.

Claudia took a gold goblet from a near by table and placed it under one of the spouts until it was filled
with water. She then handed it to Alivia. "Now, drink this cup of life and you will get what you want."

Alivia raised the goblet to her lips.

        "A word of warning!"

        Alivia lowered the goblet.

"Once you drink that, you will become very beautiful yes, and you will remain nineteen. You won't age. This water stops the ageing process in our bodies. It destroys the ageing elements in our bodies."

Alivia shrugged and drank the now wine colored liquid.

Claudia laughed as she fastened a necklace with a heart and a crown on top of the heart around Alivia's neck, "Congratulations Alivia, you've found your fountain of youth."
