Justin and McKennah were on their way to Cocoa Beach to the spend the day, where else? But at the beach. The half-hour trip seemed like minutes and soon the two of them were walking down onto the hot sand to find a spot to lay their stuff down. "This look good?," McKennah asked.
"Yep.," Justin replied dropping his bag in the sand.
McKennah looked around, it was nearly noon, and practically nobody was at the beach. "Do you realize we're like the only ones here?," She asked.
He looked around as well, "Wow..I didn't even notice. But I guess that's a good thing, right?"
"Yeah..no little 13 year old's tryin' to get in your pants!"
"Kennah!"
She laughed and set her things down before slipping her shorts down over her legs and throwing her shirt over her head to reveal her two-peice bathing suit. She caught Justin staring and grinned over at him, "See something you like Timbs?"
He looked flustered and shook his head, "N..no. Just admiring the view."
Her jaw dropped; he had recovered quickly. "Justin..you are SO treading on thin ice."
"Just jokin' with you Kennah. Wanna go swim?"
She stood up, "Yep..you?"
He nodded, stood up, and threw his shirt over his head, "You know it."
They walked side by side down the edge of the water. McKennah watched as he waded into the water till he was knee-deep. He turned and looked back at her, "Are you coming?"
She stuck her right foot into the water and quickly pulled it back, "It's cold!"
"Not once you get in it Kennah!"
She crossed her arms in front of her, "I will come in; it just might take me-"
"All day."
"Shut up!"
He stuck his tongue out at her before diving into the water and swimming farther away from her. She watched his back muscles as he swam farther and farther away. 'Good God, that boy has grown up.,' She thought as he stood up and the water dripped down his chest as he looked back at her.
She shook her head to clear her thoughts and walked into the water. Justin swam back to her, "Are you coming?"
"Yes, just slowly."
He took her hand and walked with her till it was up to her waist. She squeezed his hand tightly, "It..is...cold!"
He laughed, "It's not that bad Kennah."
"Yes it is."
She finally went underwater and he followed her as they swam into deeper waters.
After swimming and tanning almost all day, Justin and McKennah ducked into a hotel lobby's bathrooms to clean up a little. She reappeared; the saraong tied around her waist and a dark red halter top on pared with black sandals. Her hair was pulled up in a ponytail and she had managed to actually make herself look halfway decent considering she has spent all day at the beach and had no shower. Justin came out about the same time as well and smiled at her, "Look good Kennah."
"You too J..ready?"
"I'm starving..," He said.
"Me too, let's go then."
He had changed into khaki shorts and a white wifebeater with a dark blue button up shirt over it and on his head he had placed a tan baseball cap to hide his curly hair. He grabbed her hand and they went back to his car and threw their stuff in the back. "I figured we'd walk around since everything is just like right here."
"Ok..let's go eat first."
"Alright.."
They walked down the sidewalk dodging a few people here and there. "You look nice McKennah, considering you haven't had a shower today."
She smiled as they walked into a restaurant, "Well thanks Justin, I did good with what I had."
He looked her up and down before nodding, "That you did."
"Justin!"
"Sorry, couldn't help it."
"Lord, someone needs their hormones in CHECK."
He smiled at the hostess, "Two for non-smoking please."
"Right this way.," The hostess said leading them up a flight of stairs and to a table.
Their hands were still together as they followed her to the table.
All through dinner, McKennah could feel someone watching them. Justin had taken his hat off so that was probably why. "J?," She whispered.
He looked up from his meal and raised an eyebrow, "What?"
"Who's watching us?"
"What'd you mean?"
She leaned closer, "I feel like someone's watching us."
He looked around and couldn't see anyone, "Umm..I don't see any one."
"Okay, fine, I'm crazy."
He smiled, "Yes, yes, I know."
"Smartass.."
"Yes, I know this as well."
The waiter brought the check and Justin grabbed it before McKennah could take it. "Justin!"
"What?"
"I'm going to pay for my part at least."
He looked at her weird, "No you're not."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm paying for both."
She grabbed the check, "No, you're not."
"Yes, I am Kennah."
"Why?"
"It's not like I can't afford it!"
She dropped the check and he took it, smiling smugly. "Then if you're going to buy dinner, where's my diamond necklace at?"
"Comin' from Europe as we speak."
"Justin, come on, I know you have money but I don't want you to spend it on ME."
"And why not?"
"Why would you?"
"Because you're my best friend and through all of this, you've stayed my friend. You aren't my friend because of who I am or how popular I am, you're my friend because you choose to be."
"But..Justin..I just don't want you to feel obligated to spend money on ME."
He smiled and took out his credit card and the waiter came by and took it. "McKennah, this is just a nice change of pace for me. I don't mind paying for you.."
"Can I at least leave the tip?"
He shook his head, "Nope."
"Ugh..fine."
He smiled as the waiter came back and put his credit card and pen back on the table. "You two have a wonderful evening."
"You too."
McKennah smiled at him and he nodded before leaving once more. Justin filled out the receipt and stuck the other copy and his card back in his wallet. "Where to now?," He asked.
She shrugged, "I don't know."
They got up and were walking out of the restaurant when two girls approached them. McKennah recognized them from the restaurant but didn't say anything. They practically pushed her aside to get to Justin. "I knew it was him!," One said.
"I didn't say it wasn't! Hi, Justin, I'm Amy and this is Courtney...could we get an autograph?"
Justin put on his trademark smile and nodded, "Sure you can..."
They almost immediately thrust a peice of paper and a pen in his hands. They were practically all over him and it was kinda gross, to say the least. McKennah stood by, an amused smile on her face. He looked over at her and winked before looking back down at the paper. "Is she your girlfriend?," The girl named Courtney asked.
"No, that's just one of my best friends."
"Ohhh..well good, you don't have a girlfriend, do you?"
"Not right now, no."
"Oh that's good.."
The girl, Courtney, glared over at McKennah before turning back to Justin. He finished signing the peice of paper for both of them and handed it back to the girls. "Thank you SO much Justin!," Amy said.
"You all are very welcome, have a nice night."
"You too!"
Courtney was behind Amy and just about ran over McKennah when she walked by her muttering something like, "Slut." McKennah turned and stared at the girls' back, she had no right. Justin put a hand on her bare shoulder, "I see that look Kennah, it's not worth it."
"Did you just hear what she called me?!"
"No.."
"She called me a slut. Great, there goes another website about me."
He smiled and took her hand, "Come on, ready to head home?"
"Yeah..I guess."
They walked the block to his car and got in. "You're not a slut McKennah.."
"I know and you know but they don't know. How come everyone automatically thinks we're dating? I mean, can't a guy and a girl be friends? Is it that hard?"
"No..but in the position I'm in Kennah, they automatically think any girl I'm with I'm dating...I'm sorry."
"Don't be Justin..really..don't."
"I guess asking for a normal teenage night out was too much to ask for, huh?," He asked as he entered onto the interstate.
"Guess so..it's not like we didn't try or anything."
He smiled, "I know..we almost did it too.."
"Yep.."
As they climbed from the car and walked into the house, Justin stopped her, "Thank you."
"For?"
"For being my friend...I know it's hard sometimes but I'm just glad we've stayed friends so long.."
She hugged him, "Justin..you don't have to thank me for being your friend..it's all my pleasure."
He kissed the top of her head and they walked inside, "I know..but still...thank you for treating me normally."
She went to go up the stairs and turned to look at him, "Newsflash Timbs, you are normal."
