Chapter 6

They had dropped Colin off at Denise's and AJ took Madalyn to a small restaurant that was nestled in the middle of downtown.

He lit a cigarette and knew he had to tell her eventually that he had seen Trevor earlier that day. She just looked so damn gorgeous, he couldn't get over it. How Trevor could of ever let someone as wonderful and as beautiful as Madalyn out of his life, AJ would never know. She was as intelligent as they came, she was strong-willed, friendly; she was about as close to perfect as anyone could get.

"I gotta tell you something Madalyn..," He said after they had finished eating and were now drinking coffee.

"What?"

"I did something today..and I'm not sure if it was the most intelligent thing I've ever done..but I did it."

"What AJ?"

"I knew you wouldn't be off work yet and I finished early at the studio. Marcus found out where Trevor lived and I payed him a little visit."

Her eyes widened, "Why would you do something like that?"

"I wanted to know why he just all of a sudden decided to pop back into your life..."

"What'd he say?"

AJ sighed and put out his cigarette, "He said he just wants to be there for his son."

"Bullshit."

He smiled slightly, she had a fiery temper, "I know. That's what I told him."

"I can't believe him.."

"Me neither.."

"He's going to end up screwing up and he's going hurt Colin. He can hurt me all he wants but he can't keep doing that to my son.."

"I know Madalyn..I don't want him to see him at all..."

"Colin thinks his father is perfect...he thinks he's..going to be there for him. Last night he asked if me and Trevor were going to get back together.."

"What'd you tell him?"

"I told him Trevor hurt my feelings alot and that I wasn't sure if I could completely trust him right now.."

"You gave the kid hope."

She nodded, "I couldn't just come right out and say hell no."

He sighed, "I know..you're torn between your son and your ex-boyfriend."

"Lord knows what I ever saw him Trevor.."

"Something's happened to him Madalyn..he's not the same person."

"I know that..I can see it in his eyes."

AJ leaned forward, his elbows pressing on the table, "I can tell you're still hurt and afraid."

"Me?"

"Uh huh..he hurt your feelings too much..."

"I..well..I guess I thought I did something to make him leave.."

"You didn't.."

She sighed, "I keep telling myself that over and over. I keep telling myself that something deeper caused him to leave..but then this little voice has to butt right in and tell me that I did something wrong and Trevor got mad and left.."

"Madalyn.."

"I know, I know..it's pathetic really..."

AJ smiled a little, "No, it's not.."

"You know..this isn't the first time..Trevor left me.."

"What are you talking about?"

"I was about seven months pregnant I guess and about as huge as a house.."

"I bet you were cute.."

She rolled her eyes and threw an ice cube from her water playfully at him, "No, I was huge..."

"Anyways, go on, I didn't mean to interrupt."

"I know..anyways, I came home from one of my routine walks. I was cooped up in that place for so long and got so bored so I got in the habit of taking walks in the evening as it cooled off. I came home and he was just irate about something..I don't even remember what. But he was yellin' and carrying on about how his food was supposed to be on the table by the time he got home and all this other stuff. I was scared to death.."

"Where the hell was I at?"

"I think you were on tour."

"Oh..did he lay a hand on you?"

"I tried to calm him down and when I touched his arm, it startled him and he turned around and in the process pushed me backward. I hit the wall and fell down. He freaked out and left the house. He didn't come back for a week.."

"Did anything happen to you?"

She nodded, "Yeah..I almost lost Colin."

"You did? And you didn't call me? Geez Madalyn!"

"AJ, me and you weren't the best of friends or anything at the time. I called one of the neighbors, an elderly woman who loved to come by the place and fix me dinner and stuff, she was so nice. And she took me to the hospital. I went into labor but they stopped it..and I went home like three days later.."

"Did Trevor know that?"

She shook her head, "No, I didn't tell him..I don't know if he ever found out or anything though.."

"I can't believe he just left.."

"I couldn't either. I was scared out of my mind..I thought I was going to die right there on the floor...it must of been a sight to see a big, ole pregnant woman crawling along the floor to the phone..I mean, I had never had a baby before and now I was alone and in so much pain I thought I'd pass out right there.."

"God Madalyn.."

She nodded, "I know..but that's the only other time he left..I thought this last time, he'd come back in a week or so, apologizing and begging for me to forgive him."

"You don't need him."

She smiled, "And just who do I need Mr. McLean?"

"Someone like me."

"AJ..."

"What? Why do you think I asked you out?"

She shrugged, "I don't know...AJ..I like you, I really do, and I treasure our friendship more than anything right now...well, besides Colin, of course."

"Of course.," AJ said with a smile.

"I do like you though...you're hot and you know it, unfortuantely."

"Hey!"

She laughed, "I'm joking..but..seriously, just..give me some time?"

"Of course, I know this was just spur of the moment..but..you know.."

"Yeah..I do..but, we can continue these little dinner dates anytime..."

He smiled, "Good..come on, we better go get the kid."

She nodded, "Ok."

He paid the check and they walked out to his Expedition. He opened the door for her and she slid into the passenger side and he walked around to the front. As they drove to his mother's house Madalyn just had to ask something that was burning in her mind, "Did..did Trevor say anything about still caring about me?"

AJ sighed, "I think he will always care about you Madalyn..you two do have a son together. But I don't really remember.."

"Oh..okay.."

The rest of the ride was in silence.

AJ pulled the car into his mother's driveway and leaned over, "Madalyn, thank you for tonight.."

She smiled, "Thank you AJ."

He kissed her cheek gently, "And I'm apologizing now for anything stupid and retarded and just plain dumb that Trevor did to you..he doesn't deserve your love.."

She smiled, "Thank you AJ.."

He got out of the car and met her on the other side, "Next date, I say we take Colin with us."

She smiled, "Sounds like a plan."
