Chapter 3

Six months had passed since Madalyn and Colin had come to live with AJ in his huge mansion he liked to call home.

It was Colin's fourth birthday and AJ was going all out with the party. The other four members of Backstreet Boys were there, along with their significant others, his mom and various other member's family was there as well. What seemed to be dozens of presents were set up in the living room. And Colin was eating it up.

Madalyn sighed and finally sat down, Colin had so much energy that it was tiring her out quickly. He was now outside playing with Aaron, Nick's brother, and Kevin. The doorbell rang and AJ poked his head out from the kitchen, "You mind gettin' that Madalyn?"

She shook her head, "Nope..I'll get it."

Madalyn walked to the door, the smile on her face as she heard AJ swear at whatever he was doing in the kitchen, and opened the door, only to have her jaw drop. "What are you doing here?"

"It's my son's birthday, why wouldn't I be here?"

Standing in front of her was her ex and AJ's former friend, Trevor, also Colin's father. Madalyn started to close the door, "You have no right to be here Trevor."

He stuck his foot in the way, "I have every right Madalyn, he's my son too."

"You gave up that right when you left."

"Whatever, just let me see him."

"Who is it Madalyn?," AJ asked coming into view.

The door swung back open as Madalyn let it go and crossed her arms in front of her. AJ looked shocked but tried not to show it, "Trevor? What are you doing here??"

"Why does everyone keep asking that? AJ, dude, it's my son's birthday, I have the right to see him."

AJ held the door open but Trevor still couldn't get through, "Man, I don't know..everyone's here and..I just don't think it's a good idea right now.."

"What the hell is your all's problem!?," Trevor exclaimed, his voice rising.

"Mommy??"

Madalyn and AJ shared a look before Madalyn turned to see Colin standing there, his birthday hat perched back on his head. She walked over to him and led him away from the door so he couldn't see Trevor. "What'd you need sweetie?"

"I was wondering if you and uncle AJ could come outside so we can eat cake?"

Madalyn smiled and kissed his forehead, "Of course honey, we'll be right there. Go outside and wait for us, we'll be out in just a second."

He nodded and turned to go back out the door but stopped when he heard his father's voice calling his name.

Madalyn's heart stopped as Colin turned back to her, a grin plastered to his cute little face, excitement evident in his eyes, "Is that daddy mommy??? is it?"

Madalyn sighed and nodded, "Yeah..it is."

"DADDYY!!!," he exclaimed, running for the door.

Madalyn watched helplessly as he ran into his father's arms. Trevor looked as if he didn't really want to be there but felt he was doing the kid a favor by being there for a minute or two. Colin took Trevor by the hand and led him through the house, "come on daddy, we can eat cake and everything!! Come on mommy, you and uncle AJ come too!"

AJ smiled, "You go on out Colin, we'll be there in a second."

"Okay!"

Madalyn watched as Colin and Trevor went out to the backyard, the door closing behind them. AJ put a hand on her shoulder, "I'm sorry Mads..."

"Me too.."

"I wish he hadn't come in at that time.."

"Me neither..because Trevor is getting his way, just like always, and in the end that little boy is going to get his heart broken like last time."

"I know.."

Madalyn sighed, "I guess we'd better get out there."

Kristen, Kevin's wife, sat next to Madalyn watching all the emotions that crossed the woman's face all at the same time. There had been cake and presents and Colin had almost demanded his father be with him for that. She didn't know much about Trevor, just that he left Madalyn and Colin about six months before, but from what she saw, she didn't like. Trevor was handsome, yes, but that was about where the appreciation ended. He seemed fake; so sweet it was sickening.

"Are you okay Madalyn?"

Madalyn jumped before turning to Kristen, "Yeah..I'm okay.."

"Are you sure?"

"I will be..when he leaves."

"I heard him say he was going to be around Colin alot more."

"Yeah right. He'll say that just to get his, and hoping mine, hopes up so that in the end he'll just up and leave and leave me and my son crying for him to come back. I don't believe him for a second."

"Colin missed him."

"Oh I know he did..does. His father is like a God to him, practically. I used to think that too..before he changed so drastically and left."

"Have you ever thought that maybe Trevor is going to try to be around more?"

Madalyn nodded, "Yeah..I want to believe that sooo badlyn Kris..but I know him..and I know how he is..I'm so afraid he's going to hurt Colin again...and I know it's coming but I don't want it too."

Later that evening, everyone had left and Colin was asleep on the couch in the living room. Madalyn followed Trevor down the driveway to his car. He turned suddenly, the 'happy' smile gone from his face but in it's place was a evil, smug grin, "So you've moved up to my best friend, huh?"

Madalyn rolled her eyes, "Believe what you want Trevor."

"I'm just seeing things with my own eyes.."

"You're so blind that you don't know anything anymore. What happened to the man I used to love being around and to the man that I thought loved me and his son?"

"I'm here now. That's all that matters. I'm going to spend time with him Madalyn, you can't stop that. He wants to see me."

Madalyn crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him, "He's wanted to see you for over 6 months Trevor! How could you be so stupid to think that your SON is going to forget you?! You haven't been there with him while he cried his little heart out wondering why his father left! I have Trevor! God, what in the hell happened to you?!"

"Nothing happened to me Madalyn. Geez, how can you be so stupid!?"

"Me?! Oh whatever!"

"I'm going to see my son Madalyn.," He said opening the door to his car, "You can't stop it."

"Yeah and how long will this last Trevor? A week? Two? A month?"

"I'm going to be around forever in his life. I'm his father."

"Then act like it Trevor. You left me and him, I'm over you and I'm glad we never did get married. But that little boy in there loves you; when you leave he's going to be heartbroken and that's your fault."

"Bye honey, it was nice to see you again. Now I see why I left. I'll call in the next couple of days."

Madalyn just turned and walked back into the house, locking the door behind her. She watched from the window until his car was out of sight and the gates to the main driveway closed and locked themselves. It was then her dam broke, she slid down the wall until she hit the floor, crying. She could see Colin's form still on the couch, sound asleep.

AJ knelt down beside her, putting his arms around her comfortingly. "It's going to be okay Madalyn.."

"How can you say that?? He's ruining everything!"

"You're letting him get to you..."

"He has that tendency."

AJ helped her up, "i'll get Colin later, come on, let's get you to bed, okay?"

"Ok.."

"I was surprised.."

"Me too.."

Once at her room, she sat down on the edge of the bed, "I don't know what went wrong..I loved him AJ..I really, truely did. But that man we saw today wasn't the real Trevor..."

AJ sighed and sat down next to her, "I was thinking the same thing.."

"Why is he trying to hurt his son? He's already hurt me and you but why would he want to hurt an innocent child?"
