Just before breaking for lunch, George soaks one of the ribs with hardener. This is a compound made up of polyvinyl acetate, in granular form, dissolved in alcohol or acetone. The consistency can be controlled. If you use it for a hardener, add more acetone, and less liquid produces a thicker mixture that can be used as a glue.
