To know what exactly the people who commissioned the restoration one would have to ask them.

There are many reason one can imagine or come up to guess why the Last Supper was commissioned to be restored.

5. Leonardo should had never used the medium he used on a fresco.

6. Jesus' last supper is a historical event in Christian history.

This are just some of the opposing reasons why the commissioner of the Last Supper did right in restoring it.
