Meggie paced the bedroom floor impatiently, every few seconds, eyeing the white stick lying on the sink in the bathroom. She peered over at the clock. Three more minutes

Nick sat in his office, right down the hall from their bedroom, talking to Brian on the phone. Once again, they were working on tour plans.

Meggie checked the clock again. It was time. For the past eight months, she’d been taking pregnancy tests, left and right, but they were always negative. Nick and her both agreed, they’d each see a doctor, after this one.

Sighing, Meggie walked into the bathroom. One red line. She threw it violently into the wastebasket. D*mn things She rinsed her face off with water, hoping to wash away the hope she had kept inside every time she took the test. As she began to walk out of the room, something got her eye. The pregnancy test, suddenly had a new line beneath the old red line. She picked the box up out of the trash, and poured through the instructions.

“One line.. negative… two lines.. positive… positive… oh my.. god.. positive,” She dropped the box and picked up the test. Two lines.

”NICK!!!!” She screamed, tears of happiness streaming down her cheeks.

Startled, Nick almost dropped the phone.

“Bri.. be right back.. Meggie’s yelling,”

She yelled again, and Nick dropped the phone as he ran down to their bedroom.

“Are you alright?” Nick asked, frantically, flinging the door open.

”Look!” She squealed, shoving the test in front of his eyes.

“Two lines… negative again? What’s so special?” Nick asked, his face dropping.

”No… it’s positive! One line is negative! There are two lines!”

“What? You mean… we’re… you’re… pregnant?”

“If the test if right. I’ll have to go to the doctor to be sure, first.”

”What are you waiting for? Make an appointment,” Nick screeched with excitement.

“OK,” She said smiling. “Don’t tell Brian yet!”

”I won’t. Let me just tell him I have to go,”

Nick practically floated down the hallway as Meggie called her doctor. Due to a cancellation, she was able to make an appointment for 2:00 that afternoon. Nick hung up with Brian and they left for the doctor’s.

“Oh my god… what if it’s finally happening, Meg? What if we’re going to have a baby,”

She smiled back at him, just hoping the test was right.

“We’re here,” Nick said happily as they reached the office.

”Someone’s a little cheerful,” She laughed.

Nick practically pulled her inside and signed her in.

”It’ll just be a few minutes,” The receptionist told them.

To be exact, two minutes later, a nurse called her back.

”Want to come?” She asked Nick. He nodded, and followed them back into a small room.

The nurse took Meggie’s vitals, then promised the doctor would be there in a few minutes. Once again they waited, patiently, yet nervously.

”Good afternoon, Meggie,” Dr. Arnold said as she walked into the room. “Hello Nick,”

”Hi,” The couple said.

”So… pregnancy test, eh?” She asked.

“Yeah… I took one at home and it came back positive.”

”Ok… why don’t you fill this up real quick, and we’ll get the results back in a few minutes.”

She handed Meggie a cup and ushered her down to the bathroom. She returned to the room with Nick a few minutes later.

They waited silently, then the door opened.

”This is it,” Nick said.

“I’ve yet to look at the results, so we’ll all three be surprised.” She said. Flipping open the chart, she peered over the results. “Well…” She started. “Do you want to set an appointment up with an obstetrician?”

Meggie gasped, as tears of happiness sprung to her eyes.

“Obstetrician?” Nick asked.

“It’s a doctor for pregnant women,” The doctor chuckled.

”Oh… OH! You’re pregnant!”

Meggie nodded as Nick pulled her into a hug.

”Do you have an OBGYN?” She asked.

”No, I don’t.”

”Ok, here’s the one I recommend. Give her a call and set up an appointment.”

”Thank you so much,” Meggie said.

”You’re welcome.”

After paying the small amount of money for the visit and test, Nick and Meggie walked back down to the car.

“I can’t believe it,” Nick sighed as he climbed into the truck.

”Well believe it mister,” She teased.

“When are we going to tell everyone? I mean… our parents… siblings… friend… the guys…”

“How about after the OB appointment? So we can see when it’s due,”

”Ok,”

The rest of the ride home was pretty quiet, except for the occasional cursing from Nick as he drove through the heavy traffic. Soon, they arrived home and started to make an early dinner.

~ One Week Later ~

“Nicky… I’m leaving… are you coming with me?”

“Yes! Hold on a second,” He yelled from upstairs. Without Meggie knowing it, he had begun to clean his office out. It was the room nearest to theirs, and he wanted it for the nursery, so he was going to surprise Meggie with it. He finished taping up a box, then left the room, locking the door behind him. He pulled off his grungy t-shirt and slid on a dark green long-sleeved tee shirt.

“Ready,” He said as he pounced down the stairs. She stood up off the couch and followed Nick to the door. Being a gentleman (or precautious father-to-be) he opened the car door for her, and then shut it. He then got into the driver’s side, and once again, it was a silent ride all the way to the doctor’s office. Once there, they got out and rode the elevator up to the sixth floor. Meggie signed herself in then sat down beside Nick.

“Megan Carter,” A nurse called out about ten minutes later. She smiled as she saw Meggie stand up. “Mr. Carter?”

Nick nodded.

”I’ll come get you when the doctor is finished examining her.”

“Thank you,” He said. He picked up a magazine as the two disappeared out of the room.

Meggie followed the nurse into a small room.

“Why don’t you put this on,” She said handing her a cloth gown, “And I’ll tell the doctor you’re here,”

The nurse left, closing the door behind her, and Meggie stripped out of her clothing, then put on the ugly gown. Once finished, she climbed onto the table and sat on the end of it. There was a knock at the door, and a plump little woman walked in.

”Meggie?”

“Yes,”

“My name is Dr. Austin,” She said, sticking her hand out for Meggie to shake. She did, and then the doctor set her clipboard down on the counter.”

“Is this you’re first appointment for this pregnancy?”

”Yeah,”

”Alright, I’m just going to take a look and examine you, then we’ll do the sonogram. Why don’t you lie down and put your feet into the stirrups.”

Meggie obeyed, and a few minutes later, Dr. Austin had finished.

”You look very healthy. I’ll go get your husband. Why don’t you put your clothes back on, then we’ll do the sonogram.”

Dr. Austin left, and Meggie slid off the gown and returned to her normal clothes. She got back onto the table and waited for the doctor and Nick. The door opened, and the two walked in.

”You can have a seat right there, Nick,” Dr. Austin said, pointing to a stool beside the bed. As he sat, Dr. Austin pulled a machine out from the wall and opened a tube of clear gel.

“Lay down and pull your shirt up above your stomach,” She said nicely.

Meggie did as she was told.

”This will be a little cold,”

She flinched as the cool gel hit her stomach. Nick chuckled lightly.

“Ok… let’s see what we have here,” She flipped the machine on, and Meggie and Nick watched the screen intensely.

”Look’s like you’re about a two months along. The due date will be around June 19th…. There’s the head… see the brain? Its skin is clear, so you can see its bones,”

Nick watched in awe as she continued to point out body parts.

”Maybe by next time, we’ll be able to figure out the sex, that is if you want to know it.”

“Let me turn the sound on, so you can hear its heart beep,” As she turned it on, a loud thumping sounded, going very quickly.

A confused look overcame her face, and she moved the paddle around more.

“Well…” She said, a smile appearing. “There’s the heart… and the heart,”

”Excuse… me?” Nick asked. “Two hearts for one baby?”

”I’m afraid not… two hearts… for two babies,” She laughed.

Nick’s eyes widened, as tears fell from Meggie’s cheeks.

“You wanted a baby so bad, you jinxed yourself,” Nick teased Meggie.

“Are you positive we’re not having triplets, now?” Nick asked, watching the screen.

”Ninety five percent sure,” She said, wiping Meggie’s stomach off with a paper towel. “All done. On your way out, why don’t you make an appointment for two weeks,”

”Ok… thank you,” Meggie said, shaking her hand.

On the way out, she made an appointment, and then the couple rode the elevator down to the lobby.

”How are we going to tell the guys?” Meggie asked as they reached the exit doors.

“Don’t worry… I have a plan.”

“Ok…” She said wearily.

They soon reached the car and drove home. As they entered the house, Nick immediately disappeared upstairs, as Meggie sunk down into the sofa.

Nick flipped the light on, as he shut the door to his office. Christmas was a month away, so he had a month to design and create a nursery, perfect for his children, and wife. He finished packing the boxes, and took the back way down through the kitchen, and down into the basement, where he stored the boxes. He quickly snuck back upstairs into his office, and collapsed onto the floor, pencil and paper in hand. He began to design a baby’s room on the paper. Deciding to create a room, which would be useful for the children for a few years, he decided to draw a little town on the walls. But instead of people, he would use animals.

~ Two Weeks Later ~

Determined to have the nursery finished and furnished by Christmas, Nick worked non-stop. And instead of going with Meggie to the OBGYN, Danielle went along.

As he finished painting a small park onto the wall, he heard a door shut from beneath him. He rinsed out his brush in the adjoining bathroom, and then left the room, locking the door behind him.

”Hey you,” He greeted, hitting the bottom step.

“Hi,” She chirped. She handed him a small manila envelope. “It’s the sonogram pictures,”

Eagerly, he opened the envelope, and held the small black slides up to the light.

”Head… head… that’s all I can see,” He said. “Could she tell the sexes yet?”

”Yup… look,” She pointed to an area on slide. “Do you know what that is?”

A small grin appeared on his face. “He’s going to be just like his daddy,”

Meggie laughed, slapping Nick gently on the arm. “Now…does our other baby have any manlihood?”

“Nope,” She smiled.

”Once of each??” Nick asked.

She nodded, as he pulled her into a deep kiss. “Do you have any idea how much I love you?”

”Well… we’re having twins… that says a lot,” She laughed.

”I was trying to have a serious moment, here!” Nick whined.

“Sorry,” She said, kissing the tip of his nose. “Continue,”

”I’m not in the mood anymore… how about we get Christmas decorations out?”
