Chapter 5
"Got everything?" said Ike.
"Yeah. I think we're all set," said Tay.
"Wait. Let me just get something," said Zac. He ran to his room and came
out with a huge rubber boa constrictor.
"I wonder if the girls like snakes," he laughed.
"Fine. Let's go," said Ike. The guys trooped through their house, and
almost rammed into their brother Mackenzie. Mackenzie walked up to them.
"Stay," he said, in his little voice (well, he is only 2).
"I'm sorry, Mackie," said Tay, "we can't right now. But maybe sometime
we'll take you over to the girls house with us."
This seemed to satisfy Mackenzie. He toddled off through the house. The
boys smiled and went to Dolly's house.
* * * * *
"Finally! you guys are here!" said Dolly.
"Geez. I know. Took you long enough," said Bea.
"So-oo-ry," said Zac. He casually dropped the rubber snake behind him
and
stepped up.
"Let me just set up my drums real quick," he said.
"Yeah. We'll just set up and then we'll be ready," said Ike. So Dolly,
Bea , and Hope sat on the couch, waiting for the guys to finish setting
up. With a wink at his brothers, Zac pointed at the snake and put a
puzzled look on his face.
"Hey dolly?" he said.
"Yeah?" she replied.
"What's that thing in the corner?" he asked. Dolly looked closer. Then
she turned slightly green. She picked up a rake and stepped closer. Then
she calmed down.
"I guess it's a snake. Poor thing," she leaned over and picked it up.
"Oh, man! You were supposed to be scared!" said Zac, obviously
disappointed. Dolly took the snake over to Zac.
"It's hard to be scared when there's a tag attached that says 'K B Toys'
Zac," Zac turned red and everybody laughed.
"I knew I forgot something!" he said, slapping his forehead.
"It's okay, Zac. You'll get me next time," said Dolly. Zac laughed
gleefully.
"I must plot," he said, rubbing his hands together.
"You look like a mad scientist," said Hope. Then Tay spoke up.
"I really hate to ruin this moment, but shouldn't we be practicing? I
really want to try out this song," he said.
"Oh, yeah. Duh," said Ike, doing his Butthead impression. They all moved
towards their instruments.
"Let's try this guys," Tay said. He handed everybody their music.
"Tay, wait. There's a mistake on this music. It says that I sing the
second verse," said Dolly, pointing at the music. Tay rolled his eyes.
"That's because you do, Dolly," said Tay. Dolly looked confused.
"But I thought . . .I mean I. . . But you. . .," she sputtered.
"Listen. I wouldn't dream of singing your verse. It was meant to be sung
by you," said Taylor.
"Well, Okay. . . ," said Dolly reluctantly.
"Everybody ready?" said Hope.
"Yeah!" was the reply.
"Ok, a 1,2,3,4,!" said Zac. Dolly and Tay played the melody on their
keyboards. Then Bea and Ike played the opening chords. Zac and Hope
waited, then played a slow tempo. Soon Tay's beautiful voice rang out.
Then Dolly's crystal voice sang softly. But then the group stopped.
"Hmmm..... We have to think of a chorus that we all can sing together,"
said Tay thoughtfully. He started playing with his long braid.
"I think I have an idea for one," said Bea. She strummed a chord on her
guitar, then softly sang.
"Ooooohhhh my love
to me your second to none
and Oooooohhhh my love
together we equal one"
On the last word she held the final syllable, then let it slowly fade
off.
"That is fabulous," said Ike. Bea smiled sheepishly.
"I could have never come up with that," said Dolly.
"But you practically came up with the whole song," said Beatrice. "You
and Tay."
"We were all a part of it. But it's all of us," said Dolly, looking
around at everybody, "that made this song work."
"Right on, sister," said Zac.
"So are we going to try this out or what?" said Ike.
"Let's do it," said Dolly.
"Huh Huh Huh. You said 'do it'," Ike said, in his Butthead voice. Tay
shook his head.
"Let's try it from the beginning," he said. So they all played over
again, this time adding Beatrice's verse. When they finished playing,
Ike
looked at his watch.
"Yipes! It's past 3! Guys, we gotta go!" he said. Then Ike turned to he
girls.
"Wanna try this again tomorrow? Same time, same place?" The girls
groaned.
"We can't" said Hope.
"Yeah. Spring break is over tomorrow. Gotta go back to school," said
Dolly.
"You guys are so lucky," said Beatrice "Wish I was home schooled." The
guys laughed,
"No, you don't," said Zac.
"How about we meet on Friday," said Tay.
"No can do. Friday's the Spring Fling," answered Hope.
"The what?" asked Zac.
"Spring Fling. It's like a dance," said Beatrice.
"It's supposed to make going back to school easier on us," said Dolly.
She
laughed.
"If they wanted to make going back to school easier on us, why don't
they
cut the school day by oh, lets say, 4 or 5 hours." Everybody laughed.
Then Dolly's face brightened.
"Hey, wouldn't it be cool if you guys could perform?" said Dolly. "It
would make this the best school dance EVER!" she said. Ike, Tay, and Zac
looked at each other.
"Wellllllllllllll . . ." said Tay. Then he looked in Dolly's eyes. He
couldn't turn away. She held him in her gaze for a minute.
"We'll be there," said Tay. Ike looked confused. Then he looked at
Beatrice. He saw way her hair fell. It took all of his might not to
reach
out and stroke it. It shone like the sun, and it looked so soft. . .
"Definetly," Ike found himself saying. Then he looked at his watch
again.
"Hmmmm........ we could stay for a LITTLE longer. . .," he said, his
voice fading off.
"Yeah. I mean, that is, if you WANT us to," said Taylor.
"Sure. Stay. We can see a movie," said Dolly. She ushered everybody into
her living room.
My dad is on a business trip, and my mom's out shopping. So we pretty
much have the place to ourselves," she said. Then she reddened.
"Not that that MEANS anything." So they all sat down on a Dolly's long,
plush velvet sofa. Ike and Bea sat in one corner, while Zac and Hope sat
in the middle. On the other end of the sofa sat Tay and Dolly. Dolly
stood up and turned on the big screen.
"Whoa. This is like being at a theater!" exclaimed Zac. Dolly smiled
sheepishly.
"I guess," then she moved over to a big box of videos.
"So what do you guys want to see? Action? comedy? and uhhhh. . .," she
trailed off, "Drama? Horror?" then in a really soft voice she said,
"Romance?" The guys looked up.
"Well, I'm not sure about you guys, but nothing with too much action or
violence. I'm kind of tired of those type of movies," said Ike.
"I agree," said Taylor quickly.
"Well, then, what should we see?" asked Bea.
"I don't know if you guys would want to see this movie. . . it's kind of
a girl movie . . .but have you seen 'Romeo and Juliet' yet?" asked Dolly
quietly.
"Not yet. Actually, we've been wanting to see that," said Tay, poking
Ike
in the ribs.
"Uh, yeah," said Ike. Zac just nodded. It looked like he wasn't paying
attention. So Dolly popped the movie in the VCR and sat down next to
Tay.
Usually, the girls really enjoyed this movie. But this time, they found
it hard to pay attention .
