Joseph Battist (Battease) 1808/1818-1897
One day I hope to find a picture of Joseph. I was told once
that a branch of the family in New Hampshire have a picture,
so perhaps one will surface. Joseph wandered. His nomadic
life made it hard to track him in vital records but we finally
did it. On his marriage certificate to Laura, his name was
spelled like his father's - "Battist" - and on his marriage
record to Susan, his name was spelled - "Battese." Other
spellings include: Battice, Battis, Bettis, Batise, Bottis,
Battease and Batease (as our family spells it today).

Comment: nothing more known of her
Notation: Charles Henry from Laura and Joseph, and Charles A. from Susan and Joseph,
lived next door to each other in the 1900 Census, Mount Holly, Vermont.
The two Charles were half-brothers.
Joseph, by two wives we know of, had a total of 18 children.
Comment: possible other marriages of Joseph:
1. Mrs. Philena Sessions - 15 Oct 1838 Burlington, Vermont
2. Eliza Sophia Glynn - 01 Mar 1842 Londonderry, Vermont
If so, that would make Laura his 3rd wife and Susan his 4th
wife. I have no proof that the Joseph Battease who married
these women is the same Joseph Battese who married Laura Wescott
and Susan Rodgers. It is only speculation at this time.
Time line:
(spellings from the records, including census, vital, and pension)

her son George W. Batease in the Civil War. She claims her husband
Joseph Batease "has not been heard of for the last 15 years."
1884 Death of Laura Batease. She was buried in Jonathan Millard's
lot in Wells, Vermont (next to his first wife Margaret) under
the name of Laura Battease and not Laura Millard.
1896 Death of Susan Battese, of heart failure, in Orwell, Vermont.

1897 Joseph Batease, due to death, was dropped as a pensioner

Mahala (and her husband Charles P. Marnes and their children)
in Nickerson City, Reno Co., Kansas.
1910 Johnathan Millard, aged 91, still living in the same place.
Notation: A word about the birth date of Joseph Battist. The records and
and census records all give him a different age. I truely don't
believe the man kept track of his age as was common in those
days by many or he just may have been just plain sneaky so his
wives didn't know how old he really was.

Bennett's daughter married Charles Batease, and as
far as I know this is the only connection Bennett
has to my family. Many people have expressed an
interest in Bennett and for this reason, I have posted
what info I have on him and his children, here.
It is said he was indian. To date I have not
found any native background for this man. However,
this site is continually being updated with anything
new I discover, so check back from time to time.
Death Record of Mary Batease, dau. of Joseph. Race: White Indian.
