The Next Step
Part Three
Mandy is six months pregnant when she has a fall; Lucas is in the shower and she is standing near the top of the stairs she hears Lucas saying something to her and she turns to fast and falls down the stairs. She starts screaming on the way down and Lucas comes running out of the restroom. He runs down the stairs to help her up; her head is bleeding and she is holding her stomach.
“Baby, are you okay?”
“I don’t know,” she says shaking her head.
He gets her to the sofa and runs to get dressed. He takes her to the hospital and they decide the baby is just fine but Mandy has a slight concussion. They want to keep her over night for observation.
“What happened?”
“I thought I heard you calling me and I turned too quickly and ended up at the bottom of the staircase. How could I be so clumsy?”
“The doctor said your equilibrium is off; you have to get used to the weight of the baby; it could happen to anyone.”
“I feel so stupid, Lucas.”
He gets up in the bed with her and holds her close.
“Your not stupid, you’re beautiful and kind and you shouldn’t feel that way the baby is only going to get bigger you will get used to it,” he adds kissing her.
The doctors tell them the next day she may have temporary amnesia from the bump on her head; it will come on suddenly and leave the same way. They want them to let them know if that happens because it can be disconcerting. The next night Mandy wakes up screaming. Lucas just holds her.
“Sweetie, you are okay,” he whispers trying to calm her.
“Who are you,” she says looking wild eyed at him.
“I’m your husband, Lucas,” he says in a calm concerned voice.
“Why don’t I remember? What happened to me?” she says looking at her stomach.
“You hit your head when you fell.”
“Did you push me?” she says moving away from him.
“No I didn’t I love you, I heard you fall I was in the bathroom, I promise, I will never hurt you,” he says smiling at her.
“Did you marry me because I was pregnant?” she asks sincerely.
“No, we planned the pregnancy because we are in love and at that time were getting ready to marry and get a house; you are happy that you are pregnant.”
“Really? Oh, okay,” she says biting her lip.
She seems to believe him enough to snuggle up and fall asleep on his chest. He rubs his hands over her hair as she sleeps silently hoping and praying she will be okay.
Lucas calls the hospital in the morning to let them know what is happening. They tell him she should be fine and they want her to take a few days off. That morning she asks questions about what she does for a living.
“So what do I do for a living?”
“Amanda, you work as a nurse and the people at your job are more like a family to you; they think you are a great nurse,” he says kissing her as he gets out of bed to go take a shower.
“You just rest I will be right out, okay.”
Mandy lay in the bed rubbing her tummy; she loves the way the baby kicks. She is smiling when Lucas comes out of the shower. Lucas sees her smile and falls for her all over again.
“You called me Amanda, you usually call me Mandy,” she says with a smile.
“You are right, are you starting to remember?” he says going toward her in only a towel.
“I don’t know but I know it didn’t sound natural when you said it,”
“Well, you were right, I rarely call you that.”
Lucas helps her to the bathroom to take a shower and the doorbell rings as he shuts the door.
“I’ll be right back,” he says to the door.
Karen as at the door and he lets her in.
“Hi, how is Mandy?”
He kisses her on the cheek.
“She seems physically fine but she has amnesia; though she did know I didn’t usually call her Amanda?”
“It sounds precarious, so I should let her ask the questions, right?” Karen says.
“Yes, that way she only gets what she wants to know and nothing extra, I hate doing this to you mom and I will stay home if you don’t want to stay here,” he says.
“No, I love Mandy I want to help.”
Lucas goes back upstairs and Mandy is standing in her closet clothed in her robe. She is taking out her things seeking something to wear. Lucas comes up behind her and pulls out his favorite maternity outfit. It is a peach outfit that accents her tan complexion: maternity Capri’s and a short sleeve eyelet top with buttons down the front, cute and sexy. She smiles at him and goes to put it on.
“Thanks,” she says kissing him on the cheek, but he doesn’t let her go he puts his hands on the back of her waist and her hands go around his neck, as they kiss passionately.
“It feels so right,” she says.
“It is right, I love you Mandy and we can get through this together,” he says kissing her on the neck.
Karen knocks on the open door.
“Sorry to interrupt, but breakfast is ready.”
Mandy quickly dresses and goes to meet them downstairs; but Lucas is gone and she doesn’t know the maids name.
“Hi, what is your name?” she asks.
“I’m your mother in law, Karen,” Karen says smiling at her, “Lucas said he will call you at lunch time from work,” she adds.
“Thanks, I didn’t know who you were, do you like me?”
“Mandy I love you; you have been so good for my son and you are a very sweet young lady,” she says giving her a hug.
Mandy smiles at her as she sits down to eat; Karen answers all her questions but after a while she thinks they should take a break. She calls Peyton to see how Tristan is doing and when she gets off the phone she tells Mandy about Lucas’ baby brother.
Lucas gets home as soon as he can after work to relieve Karen and is surprised to see Andy and Tristan there. Karen is in the kitchen with Mandy cooking and Andy is on the floor with the baby playing. Lucas comes in and goes up for a shower; and comes back down smelling fresh. He goes to the kitchen to give his wife a proper kiss and holds
his baby brother.
“This is nice, one big happy family,” Andy says as they are eating dinner.
“Do we do this often?” Mandy asks.
“No, but I wish we did,” Lucas answers.
“This is nice but I bet Mandy is ready to be alone with Lucas,” Karen says as her and Andy are leaving.
Before she leaves she pulls Lucas aside to tell him how much Mandy has remembered.
”She still isn’t remembering much but she seems able to accept things easily enough, do want me to return tomorrow or will you bring her by the café?”
“I think I will stay home tomorrow, I really don’t want her around town by herself; I will take her to some of our favorite places and to the hospital; maybe it will trigger her memory,” he says.
“Just don’t push her, Lucas, I’m sure it’s best if she remembers on her own,” Karen says hugging Lucas and then going to hug Mandy.
It is two days later that Mandy starts to remember and then it all comes back in a rush. She wakes up with a terrible headache. Lucas gets her some aspirin but she refuses to take it because of the baby.
“I just need to relax, I’ll be fine. I’m sorry I woke you,” she says, ”We are having a little girl named Amber,” she adds smiling.
“Yes, we are sweetheart,” he says holding her close.
