"Is she okay?" Chris asked. The two of us were laying on lounge chairs by the hotel's indoor pool while Alex, Star, and Mel were passing a volleyball around in the shallow end. I shrugged.
"I don't know, Chris," I said, casting a glance at Alex. "She and Brian are getting along great, but Kevin is hurting her so much. I wish I could help her, but I have no idea what to do."
'Whatever you did this afternoon seems to have worked," he commented.
"I just held her while she cried," I admitted, feeling completely useless.
"That's all she needs," Chris said. "Alex is a strong girl-"
"Woman."
"Sorry," Chris apologized, "she still feels like my little sister." He continued. "She's a strong woman. If she needs help, she'll ask for it. Also, I know that if anything else goes wrong, Star and the others will probably be the first to beat the sh*t out of Kevin, not matter how hard we try to get to him first." I chuckled, picturing what he'd just said. I sighed.
"I know what you're saying, but I still can't help feeling useless."
"You should know by now that Alex makes everyone feel useless," Chris joked, elbowing me lightly in the ribs. I laughed and nodded in agreement.
"What are you two losers doing over there?" Star called from the far end of the pool.
"Losers?" I said, raising an eyebrow at Chris.
"Them fightin' words!" Chris yelled back at Star. She wiggled her eyebrows at him.
"Come and get us!" Alex yelled. Chris looked at me and we bolted out of the chair, diving into the pool.

"Oh sh*t," Mel muttered as the guys bolted out of their chairs.
"Nice going, Star," I said, backing towards the edge of the pool.
"Me!?!" Star exclaimed, incredulously. "You're the one that said 'Come and get us'!"
"Well, whoever did it, we've all still gotta run," I pointed out. As soon as the guys reached us, we bolted to the other side of the pool.
"What the-" JC muttered as soon as he came up for air. He looked around and spotted us at the other side of the pool. We waved and grinned.
Basically, the rest of the night went like that. Thank god there wasn't a concert.
