A Steady Soul
I'm happy to say that I sent Forest to Chicago last night without so much as a flinch. He left around 10 PM, after spending a couple of nice, quiet hours at home, reading to Kirstin, and being with me. It's amazing how secure I can be when I remember that I'm secure. I smiled, packed him some road munchies, and saw him off. I think he was as sorry to leave as I was to see him going, but neither one of us got all upset about it, which is a good thing.I sat up late and did taxes last night. It's my first time using Turbo Tax, and when I got to the end, I was suspicious of it. Could it really be that easy? All I'd done was answer a list of questions, and there was my return, all done. All I'm missing is the social security number of my babysitter. It can't be that simple, can it? A $1500 return is just too good to be true. But I entered in all the stuff I had. I answered all the questions honestly and completely. Still, at midnight I slunk into bed, waiting for the government to come pounding on my door and drag me away.
This morning I was happy to see the sun. I actually don't mind getting up in the morning when it's daylight. These days Kirstin is such a big girl that I go upstairs to wake her, and then emerge from my room 45 minutes later to see her all dressed and ready for school, finishing the breakfast she's made for herself. I would feel bad about that, but she seems proud of her self-sufficiency, so I leave it alone. Besides, it means that it's easier than ever for us to be on time in the morning. Today I was actually early for work. Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles.
Time is flying by me today, and I think Forest will be home before I know it. I had one meeting all morning, I really ought to go to lunch, then I have a 1 PM meeting and a 2:30 PM meeting, both of which will require my active participation. Wow. By the time that second meeting ends it will be time to pick Kirstin up from Jean's. Then it will be time to fix dinner, and by the time we are done with a quick meal it will be time to drive to Bath. I promised to run box office tonight, and don't want to be late.
I'm really proud of Kirstin this week. She hasn't brought home any extra work at all, having gotten it all done in class. She's been well-behaved, and was extremely excited by how well her first attempts at leadership have been going. She and the kids in class were frustrated last week because they kept having to miss recess because a few noisy kids spoiled it for everyone by talking out of turn. I explained on Monday night to Kirstin how leadership works, and that if she and a small group of kids set a good example by demonstration, the other kids would very likely follow along. I told her that when the classroom started to get noisy, she and a couple of friends should press their index finger to their lips, the universal symbol for silence.
She was thrilled that it worked, and it earned her some praise from her teacher, which has been pretty scarce for her this year. She was so pleased that she begged to call her dad about it the instant she got home from school. She was doubly thrilled because she got pats on the back from other kids at school who were glad to get to go out for recess again.
A win win situation.
Tomorrow I'm going to be helping out at The Store, slicing bananas for their grand opening. Apparently they expect to sell a lot of banana splits, and opening day is a bit of a family celebration, so I was invited along. I like that bunch (banana pun), so it should be fun. Everyone should come to Tate's Freeze (Grand River Ave just West of Larch/Cedar) on Saturday before sundown and get some ice cream. It's 2 for 1. Woo hoo! It's supposed to be in the mid-fifties this weekend, too. Sounds like fun.
I'm off to grab some lunch before I get sucked into the next great meeting. I'll write again soon as long as the IRS doesn't lock me up.
