I had tried to forget about the girl and it had been months since the incident. Actually, Nick and mine's one-year anniversary is tonight. I walked into the room where Donna was waiting for me.
"Hey Donna," I said as I sat down in one of the chairs.
"Hey Denia. How are you?"
"Really happy!" I exclaimed. "Nick and I are celebrating our one year anniversary tonight."
"One year? That's wonderf-" said Donna suddenly stopping. "Wait, did you say tonight?"
"Yeah. Why?" I asked.
"Oh my gosh, Denia! We have an AIDS Benefit tonight!"
"What?" I said as my jaw dropped and my stomach got tied in knots.
"Yeah, it's at eight tonight. I thought I told you," said Donna.
"You didn't tell me! I can't miss dinner tonight with Nick," I said frustrated.
"Denia, you have to. You can call Nick up and do dinner tomorrow or something."
"Donna, he's flying up tonight for dinner. We're having it in New York."
"Well, the benefit is also in New York and it is a very important appearance that you have to make. I'm sorry, Denia, but if you don't go the paparazzi will end up saying that you don't care if people die from AIDS or something like that."
"Oh!" I whined. "I don't even know what to wear."
"Just wear whatever you were going to wear tonight for dinner."
"Umm…no. That's a dress for our special occasion. I'll look around and pick one out. Ugh! Now I have to call Nick and cancel. This just isn't going to be a pretty conversation."
"I'm sorry, Denia. I truly wish there was something I could do about it, but I can't."
"It's okay, Donna. I understand. Nick's a singer, so maybe he'll understand too."
"He should," said Donna getting up. I got up too and we went out to the streets of New York. "You need to wear a dress you haven't worn before for tonight."
"Oh, it's such a waste of money."
"But it makes you look good to the public, so try to pick something out for tonight. I'll meet you in an hour and a half in front of the hotel to go to the benefit."
"All right. I'll see you later," I said as we parted ways. I had put my sunglasses on and placed my hair in a messy bun. I walked across the street to a small park and sat down on a bench. I looked around to make sure no one was around me and proceeded to take out my cell phone. I punched in Nick's cell number and waited for him to pick up. It just kept ringing and ringing. He probably turned it off, since he's on the plane and everything. "Ugh! Nick, you just have to make this difficult, don't you?" I said talking to myself as I got off the bench and went to hail a taxi.
I took the taxi to the street that held my favorite stores, which included Prada, Tommy Hilfiger, and Versace. I walked on the sidewalks just looking at the windows. I was just looking for something simplistic and had decided on a sleeveless scarlet satin dress. I walked into Prada and met with the manager and she recognized who I was and checked if I had already spent my thousand dollars there yet and I hadn't. I was happy, because the dress was only six hundred, which wasn't that bad for Prada. If you don't know much about being a celebrity, certain stores or brands give you an allowance of money so you can shop there. This allows you to be an advertisement for them. For example, many reporters and people will ask whom I'm wearing and I'll say Prada and their business will get better. The lady came back with the dressed all bagged and everything and I headed over to Tiffany's to look for some jewelry.
I walked in and was looking for a nice choker to accent my neck. I found a ruby and diamond drop choker and rented it for the night. I put it on my tab and before I left the store, I went to a secluded corner and tried calling Nick again. However, there was still no reply. I didn't want him to think I stood him up and I seriously didn't know what to do. I decided to call Brian, who is actually in Georgia right now.
"Brian, can you do me a major favor?" I asked.
"Sure, what is it?"
"I just found out that I have a benefit to go to tonight, but-"
"Denia, your one year anniversary is tonight."
"Yeah, I know that, but Donna's not letting me out of this. It's a benefit for AIDS."
"So what do you want me to do?"
"I've been trying to call Nick and he hasn't been answering his phone. So do you think you could try calling later on and telling him that I couldn't make it and that I'm very sorry."
"I'll try."
"I just hope he won't be mad at me, Brian."
"Hey, it's Nick. He'll understand."
"Thanks Bri. Well, I've gotta go get ready and everything. I'll talk to you later."
"You're welcome and bye."
