There is one story I remember in particular that my mom tells.  She said she came into work one morning and her boss came in ranting about something that had happened to him the night before.  You see, he drove by the Old Sheldon Church every day on his way to work and home from work.  One evening as he was driving past, he swore he heard gun fire and saw a flash of light in rearview mirror from guns being fired.  It scared him enough to tell everyone it happened, so it must have spooked him.

There is another familiar story told about Old Sheldon Church Road that I have heard several people speak of.  Supposedly, a woman was on her way home one dark night, and she heard the infamous gunfire that many people speak of hearing on that road.  She claimed she saw lights flashing, like a bullet being shot out of a gun, and saw smoke billowing as it would from a lot of gunfire.  She sped down the road and pulled into a gas station in a near town to calm her nerves.  When she stepped out of her car, she was shocked to find bullet holes strewn up and down both sides of her car....

If you can't tell, I love folklore and ghost stories.  The Lowcountry is full of them.  This area has seen many years and many wars.  This picture is of Old Sheldon Road during broad daylight.  It is surrounded by beautiful lush greenery, trees dating back to years before the Civil War, and very sparse houses.  The area is quite beautiful and subtely remote in location.  But after the sun goes down, that lush greenery makes it seem much darker than most roads.  There are no street lights, and rarely a house close enough to shed any light on the road.
