The 18th International Oliver Cromwell Jazz Festival
This was my first visit to Upton. The roots of the festival are firmly planted in the British Trad scene. But there was much besides. I was particularly thrilled by the Jazz Orchestra "Harlem", which sought to revive the New-York dance music of the twenties and thirties, (early Ellington etc), with some top class players. It included a reeds trio which had real style rather than just the brashness of some big bands. Nick Ward on drums, seems to delight in the music of this era; He plays a distinctive role guesting with different dixieland bands on the circuit. The Magnolia Jazz Band know their audience well, and when a hundred brightly coloured umbrellas appeared out of nowhere to parade around the marquee, I was sorry I didn't have my camera to hand. It was a real feast of good music.
