Spyware
Spyware- Computer Security and Safety- SPYWARE
What is Spyware?
Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet
connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware
applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware
programs that can be downloaded from the Internet; however, it should be noted that
the majority of shareware and freeware applications do not come with spyware. Once
installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that
information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information
about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.
How can you shield yourself from spyware?
To minimize the chance of contracting spyware, you must
be smart and watch the things that you download. Avoid going to hacker websites and adult
websites, because they install spyware on your computer in a blink of an eye. Use software such
as Ad-Watch from Norton and once you know that spyware is on your computer download scanners.
Scanners work the same as anti-virus applications(see Viruses) and they work
just as well. Popular and effective anti-spyware scanners such as Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Mozzila's Spyware
Blaster can be downloaded free off the internet.
