What is SPAM?
SPAM is unsolicited-bulk email. It can be commercial (such as an ad for a product and service), or non-comercial (such as a chain letter). Sometimes spam can even contain virues (see VIRUSES).
Where does SPAM come from?
SPAM email comes from spammers of course. These people have their computers automatically scan websites and servers for email addresses. They then send bulk emails to all of the email addresses they have. Spammers also use "zombie" computers (computers they and hackers have installed special software on) to assists in sending even more bulk email. Spammers also create CDs of hundreds of stolen email addresses and then they sell them to other viruses around the world. Companies and email newsgroups also sell emails from people who have signed up to recieve emial notices to other companies and spammers.
How can you protect against SPAM? To protect against SPAM you can use blocking programs available at computer stores and online, but this only works if you access your email from an application insatlled on your computer. If you access your email using the internet, you will have to use a julk mail filter. And, you can always ask your email of internet service provider to use a block list such as the Spamhaus Block List, Exploits Block List or the ROKSO List.
