Duck Creek Wildlife Area
U.S. 60 in Poplar Bluff, to HWY 51 north at Fisk for 19.5 miles.
Duck Creek Wildlife Area, 6,190 acres, reminiscent of the deep south. The largest hardwood area of swamp remaining in MO. Here the otter play among cypress and tupleo white yellow-crowned night herons walk the shorelines. Duck Creek is home to snow geese and eagles. You can hike, bird-watch, canoe or fish in the Missouri Bootheel.
Castor River Conservation Area
HWY 34. State Route Y to southern section or Country Road 822 to the northern section.
Castor River Conservation Area is 9,491 acres and has a 15 mile trail which is open to hikers, bikers and as a horse trail. The trail travels through upland oaks and hickory trees over steep hills. The Castor River runs nearby. Primitive camping is allowed. Blue Pond Natural Area, a sinkhole pond, is a scenic feature of the conservation area, containing clear deep blue water. Forest and glades also support a rich mix of wildlife.
