Frequently Asked Questions

Ryan®Soft

Q. What are the minimum system requirements for RyanSoft2?
A. Windows 95/98/NT 486 (66 MHz or greater)IBM compatible PC Pentium or equivalent recommended for Windows 98/NT 8 MB RAM (WIN 95) 16 MB RAM (WIN 98/NT), 32 MB recommended VGA Gray Scale Monitor
Q. What do I need to download the data from a RL100 or PRO to my PC?
A. Along with the RyanSoft 2 for Windows now on your machine, you will need an Interface cable with serial adapter. This is available from Sensitech. If you are connecting to a 25-pin serial connector on your PC you will also need a 25 pin to 9V pin serial adapter. If needed, the adapter is widely available at retail outlets. Contact Technical Services at support@sensitech.com or call (800) 843-8367 if you still need help.

Q. Will any cable work with the RL100 or PRO temperature monitor?
A. No. The RL100 Interface cable is specifically designed to work with the RL100 and PRO. RLSoft for DOS could communicate over a parallel port, or with a parallel/serial adapter could use a serial port. To increase reliability RyanSoft 2 for Windows requires the use of the interface cable and a serial port.

Q. Can I do anything to lower integrity of, or lose, data already recorded in a RL100 or PRO temperature monitor?
A. Yes. Data can be lost or corrupted if the instrument is connected to the interface cable when the computer is turned on. Ensure that the computer is on, and RyanSoft 2 for Windows is running before the interface cable is connected to the instrument.

Q. What can I do to maximize battery life?
A. Two things can be done to get the most from the battery. Choose the "Stop logging" button during recovery if the instrument is not full so it is not running while not needed. Also, disconnect the instrument from the interface cable after deploying or recovering.

Q. My computer has two COM ports. Why do I only get one port to select when configuring the software?
A. When you open the Settings pull down menu and select Port selection the software will look for, and only list, serial ports that appear to be available. Due to the nature of hardware configurations ports in use sometimes report being free. Most computers come with two serial ports. Many times a port will have the mouse, a scanner, or infrared interface connected to it making it unavailable.

Q. Where should I position the instrument for best results?
A. Airflow is the key. The instrument should be placed where the air can flow freely around the unit. Placement should not be too near heating, cooling, or humidifying equipment. Placement near an air inlet or outlet should also be avoided.

Q. Can I install RyanSoft 2 for Windows onto multiple PCs over network connections?
A. Yes. RyanSoft 2 for Windows can be installed across a network. The installation program must be run on each computer that will use RyanSoft 2 for Windows. Extra interface equipment can be obtained for each machine by contacting your Client Services representative at (800) 843-8467. Contact Technical Services at support@sensitech.com or call (800) 843-8367 if you need additional help.
