Awwgh! -- <brain explodes>

You-ya -- La' Mule's drumma.

Nao -- I don't know either!

Isuke -- On one of those ugly hide-guitar-shaped basses... bad taste!

Ouch -- Look how widely splayed his pointer and middle fingers are! That really looks like it actually HURTS! Skin ripping and all that!

Wriggle -- "It's not an official visual kei video without a straight jacket shot!"

La' Mule' -- The song Inspire, I failed to mention, really kicks out some cool jams. One of their best.

Slab -- Ah, the obligatory surgical gurney shot!

Gooood Eeeeevening -- Alfred Hitchcock? Look at those cheeks! <squeezes 'em>

Messy -- Nao always did have trouble eating Spaghetti-O's.

Gloomy -- The Wrath of Kon

Who Is This? -- I don't even remember snapping this screen capture, yet here it is... who is that?

Operation! -- "You're the doc-tor! Collecting all your pay!" "Don't touch the side, or... NRRRRNT!" <nose lights up>

La' Mule? "The Mule?"

now playing:
La' Mule's Climax (2001)

Well, as a substitute for my extremely-dull-lately existence, here's some vidcaps! From La' Mule's Inspire PV, which they put out a few years ago, selling for Y1800 (for the one song, plus a little live-clips montage at the back with the credits). I saw it for a few hundred yen and decided to pick it up, and I'm glad I did, it's pretty cool. The camerawork and performances are eye-catching, the sets are better than your typical stand-in-an-empty-field "sets" promulgated by most indie video directors, and the lighting has a cool surrealist cache.

The editing is the only real drawback to the video -- it's rapid-fire, but in a bad way, like the editor was young and eager make the video speedy, but didn't know exactly how (like, dude, it's important to MATCH the shots you're cutting between... a cut will seem more jarring/drastic/cool if you cut from a close-up to a long shot, for example, or from a blue-tinged set to a yellow-tinged one. The editor seems to have had ample footage to work with, but decided to just do jump cuts from the same shots over and over again like a putz.)

So the vid ain't perfect, but it's one of the more interesting indies PVs I've seen. And more enjoyable the half the stuff on X Japan's Clips II, which is a bit of a snooze.

Oh, hey, La' Mule's gonna be doing a gig at Cafe le Psyence (the Hide Museum's club) in early January. Wanna come?

<<<prev / next>>>

Yoshiki -- 1, 2, 3, 4!

Woohoo! -- "I'm at my wit's end!"

Pata and Heath -- Having a good time for once!

Toshi -- "I hear a knock on the door..."

To-kyo Do-mu! -- Look at all the people!

Hide -- The Weekend Live 1996 video -- and both Hide and Pata are very shiny happy people, smiling all over the place.

Let Me Drain! -- Shots from X Japan's Drain video. If the band were in it, it'd have been -really- cool.
