I just heard that Chuck Schuldiner, one of the best metal guitarist/songwriter
guys who ever lived, died on the 13th, around 4pm EST.
He was 30 or so, and had been suffering from some sort of brain
cancer type of thing going on, so it's not sudden. It just sucks.
His
band, Death, had some very killer albums. Heavy isn't hard to do,
and technical wizardry isn't a rare thing anymore, but combining the
two into something special was Chuck's forte; and it was, I think,
Death's last album, The Sound of Perseverance, that contributed
to my segue from the more straight-ahead metal of my youth to the
more offbeat scales, beats, and sounds that visual kei bands like
Dir en grey do every now and again.
Chalk
up another guitar hero I never got to see perform live. I'm 1-for-2
now (I missed out on Steve Clark and Chuck Schuldiner, but I got to
see Hide.)
