THE DOS AND DON'TS OF AN INDIE ROCK BEGINNER

DO have a CD-R drive or a way to make mix tapes . Otherwise, you should just give up your indie dream right now.

DON’T listen to commercial radio, unless you’re quenching a Tool craving.

DO buy At the Drive In’s Relationship of Command. Its practically an indie rocker’s musical equivalent of the Bible.

DON’T watch MTV, MTV2, VH1, or even Much Music. Ok, you can watch Much Music, but only if they’re showing Trail of Dead’s Relative Ways video, and even the you should hate yourself for doing so.

DO listen to bands like Spoon, the Dismemberment Plan, Death Cab for Cutie, and Modest Mouse. Sure, everyone else in the world listens to them too, but that’s because they rock.

DON’T be afraid to listen to bands that have already met their unfortunate demise; just keep in mind you’ll never be able to see them live.

DO go to local shows, especially if you live in Seattle, San Diego, or Omaha.

DON’T feel obligated to buy vinyl, unless your parents are already avid fans or you have enough cash to spend on a record player.

DO go to Epitonic.com. They provide descriptions, mp3s, and other resources to many of the best indie bands, along with punk, techno, and other genres.

DON’T buy music at the mall. The chances of finding most albums at chain stores is pretty slim (except for possibly at Virgin), and its a hell of a lot cheaper to get them through Insound.com.

DO go to the links section of band and label sites. I discovered Ides of Space, an unbelievable band from Australia, through the recommendation of another band’s links page.
