Fire protection for the Patricksburg area prior to the 1970's came from the Spencer Fire Department. In 1971 the Patricksburg Community Volunteer Fire Department was formed to provide protection to the area. Initially 29 volunteers provided this service. PCVFD is known in Owen County as Station 7. All personnel and apparatus numbers start with seven. Trucks are double digits such as 72, 73.... Personnel numbers are three digits starting with the fire chief (700). PCVFD is a self-owned, not for profit organization that receives funds through township,
contracts with Marion, Lafayette and Morgan townships in Owen County. Funds collected annually barely provide enough income to address the needs of the department and ensure a high level of service to our area. Therefore, paid full time firemen are an impossibility. The firefighters of PCVFD are 100% volunteer and have jobs which leaves our area vulnerable at certain times of the day. This causes PCVFD as well as other departments in the area to rely on mutual aid from surrounding fire departments in the area..

What's mutual aid and how does a department with one station and limited manpower and equipment manage it's larger fires...........with mutual aid of course! Mutual aid is the process of neighboring fire departments assisting each other in the event of large fires, accidents or disasters. PCVFD uses and provides mutual aid through manpower and apparatus support. Through mutual aid agreements fire departments have preset guidelines to assist each other in times that would warrant extra manpower or the need for extra apparatus such as a school or large structure fire. The benefit of mutual aid was demonstrated by a large fire on the Spencer town square which involved half of a city block bordering the town square. Approximately 9 different fire departments responded with manpower and apparatus to this fire. Mutual aid can be requested on an as needed basis including during normal work hours for a majority of our volunteers. This ensures that the residents in our area are never without fire protection. Automatic mutual aid protocols can also be agreed upon by neighboring departments in advance to compensate for inadequate water supply or manpower. Some departments that provide or request mutual aid from PCVFD are Franklin Township FD, Bowling Green FD, Coal City FD, Poland FD and Owen Valley FD.

PCVFD was the first rural fire department in Owen County. At that time our service area included the entire western half of Owen County. Since then other departments have formed to better serve outlying areas of the county. At this time our service area consists of Marion, Lafayette and part of Morgan township. This includes three unincorporated towns. The service area (outlined in green to the left) constitutes approximately 96 square miles and 3,492 residents. Included is the Patricksburg Elementary School (K - 6th grades) and part of the Owen-Putnam State Forest. The low population of the area reflects the rural setting in which we serve but does not accurately depict the diversity of calls we respond to. Being a rural area PCVFD must maintain a level of readiness to respond to various farm related incidents including medical assistance in the event of machine related accidents or chemical spills.
