Buckner's Cave, Monroe County, Indiana

Back to Main

Buckner's Cave is a heavily visited cave in Monroe County, Indiana. The cave is owned by Richard Blenz who allows visitation to his cave for those who sign in at the guest register. Since he is devoting his time, energy and LIFE to giving you a place to cave, a donation in the box would be appropriate.

The cave consists of 2.98 miles (WCG 1963) of passage ranging from walking to crawling/stooping to crevicing. The cave is generally viewed as safe in rainy weather. The upper levels in Buckner's are dry and dusty while the lower level stream usually ranges from a few inches to a few feet in depth.

Buckner's Cave has been terribly vandalized in recent history and is a prime example of everything you should not do in a cave. Vandalism ranges from spraypaint to broken speleothems to trash and carbide left behind by other careless cavers to urine and feces being deposited in the cave. Don't be fooled into thinking that this is the proper way to treat a cave!

In the past, Buckner's may have gone by the names Blair or Saltpeter Cave. There used to be a significant signature etched in a wall of the cave, although it has been obliterated by careless acts of vandalism. The name L.V. Cushing and date 1775 could once be found etched in the wall of the signature room.

Buckner's entrance is a 15' by 15' hole in a collapse sink. From there, the main part of the cave is entered by way of a 600' hands and knees to belly crawl.
