How do you navigate the disc?? In your inventory you will find a booklet which will tell you about the Disc's gods, a newbie guide book, and a cheap looking book which is actually Thee Alpah to Oemega Mapp to Ankh-Morpk. When you look at this book it will give you instructions on how to use it, and is useful for some of the landmarks on the disc. Another method of finding places around AM is the street urchins you probably saw in the drum, if you say help urchin they will tell you where they can take you. Then you just say take me to <location> and they will do so. These methods are fine to see the tourist attractions, but a real adventurer wants to see a cities back alleys and more interesting areas, that aren't in the tourist guides. Don't despair, the Disc has some map makers who are only too happy to share their work with you. The most famous of whom is Chopper whose Atlas shows the whole Disc, but unfortunately his web site has recently died, but not to worry, as his work lives on. The Discworld home page has links to some of the new breed of map makers who have taken on the daunting task.
To travel to the other towns outside of AM, you can either walk, which isn't recommended in the forests at night, or catch the carriage from outside the acme carriage company at the intersection of Street of Small Gods and Upper Broadway. You will be happy to know that public transport is free in Am. There is also the continent of Klatch you can visit by going to the tour guide in Sator Square and paying $20, or you can ask some nice wizard or priest to portal you there. Speaking of portals, if you come across one its a good idea to look enter door first to see where it goes before entering it, as it may go somewhere a new adventurer definitely doesn't want to end up. Just remember when using these maps that some areas are hidden and just waiting to be found, and that on finding some of these areas you then wished you hadn't :-)
Is it safe to wander around I hear you shout!! The answer is basically yes, and that things will only usually attack you if you attack them first. There are some very dangerous places on the disc such as the shades, gloomy forest and parts of the Ramtops, but all these areas are clearly marked as dangerous and you enter at your own risk. Its also wise not to wander around the forests at night, and when you visit the city of Khot-Lip-Khin (KLK) in Klatch you will find out how hungry the crocodiles in the Djiel river are if you kill a priest or cat there. But other than that you can wonder round and explore in relative safety.
