CORA HOUSTON

HOUSTON, CORNA - age 91, of Speedwell, Tenn., passed away August 9, 1999, at Claiborne County Hospital. She had attended Yoakum Chapel Church.

Preceded in death by husband, Sam Houston; son, Billy Houston; daughters, Iva Jean Sowders, Mary Ann Feltner, Wilma Wright, Lillian Houston; stepdaughter, Mossie Butler; brother, Andrew Patrick.

Survivors: son, James C. Houston, LaFollette, Tenn.; daughter, Martha Rutter, Speedwell, Tenn.; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at Reece Valley Chapel with Rev. Billy Paul officiating. Music by Yoakum Chapel Choir. Graveside service 11 a.m. Thursday at Houston Family Cemetery.

Pallbearers: David Rutter, Billy Rutter, Bernard Feltner, Sr., Bernard Feltner, Jr., Aaron Mason and Monty Wright.

Family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Reece Funeral Home and Valley Chapel, 869-3651 or 626-4249.

AMANDA HEAROD

Amanda Josephine Jackson was born Oct. 23, 1880 and departed this life March 15, 1957 at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 20 days.

She was united in marriage to Rev. T.B. Hearod on Oct. 18, 1896. To this union six children were born, 5 having preceded her in death. Her husband passed away Feb. 11, 1953. She is survived by one son, Chalmer Hearod; 6 grandchildren; two sisters and a number of great grand children.

She professed faith in Christ in early life and united with the General Baptist Church.

When the Piggott General Baptist Church was organized, she, with her husband became members very shortly afterwards.

Except for short periods when their work took them elsewhere, her membership has remained with the Piggott church. In 1920 she was elected Field Worker for the Moark Sunday School Convention and she served for a year there.

She was well known throughout the Moark Association, having accompanied her husband much of the time in his pastoral and evangelistic labors. She did all his reading for him the last several years of his ministry.

Funeral services were held at the General Baptist Church in Piggott, Ark., Monday, March 18, 1957, at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. S.I. Runyon, assisted by Rev. Rip Meriwether. Internment was in the piggott Cemetery with Russell Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

HONEYCUTT, MR. SHELBY GENE - age 60 of Tazwell was born November 9, 1938 and passed away August 12, 1999 at the Claiborne County Hospital.

He was a member of the Duncan Chapel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by: parents, Thomas Sterling and Dorothy (Duncan) Honeycutt; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Minnie Honeycutt; nephew, Mike Honeycutt.

He is survived by: loving wife of 38 years: JoEllen (Harmon) Honeycutt of Tazwell; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Sheila Honeycutt of Tazwell, Sam and Jodi Honeycutt of Knoxville, TN; son, Thomas Honeycutt of Cumberland Gap, TN; grandchildren, Lindsey and Brittany Honeycutt of Tazwell, Josh Honeycutt of Cumberland Gap, TN; sisters and brothers-in-law, Edith and Lawrence Pressnell, Reba and Everett Pressnell, both of Tazwell; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carson and Nancy Honeycutt, Wade and Joyce Honeycutt, Ray and Juanita Honeycutt, Paul and Nancy Honeycutt, all of Tazwell; several nieces and nephews, whom he cherished dearly and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, August 14, 1999 at the Claiborne Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 15, 1999 in the Claiborne Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Oliver and Rev. Steve Moyers officiating. Music Kenny Trent. Pallbearers: Kenny Williams, Randy Schooler, Bill Marsee, Andy Duncan, Denny Peters, Sam McCollough. Honorary Pallbearers: Lawrence Pressnell, Everett Pressnell, Larry Pressnell, David Honeycutt, Dexter Honeycutt, Jeff Honeycutt. Burial in the Irish Memorial Gardens. Claiborne Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Marcus Capps, 61, of LaFollette, died Thursday, August 12, at East Tennessee Baptist Hospital in Knoxville.

He was a Campbell County school teacher for 39 years and taught at West LaFollette Elementary. He was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Jellico Lodge #527 F&AM, LaFollette Charter #212 Royal Arch Masons, and former member of Kentucky Army National Guard.

He was preceded in death by parents, Whyte and Bertha Capps.

Survivors include wife, Patsy Smith Capps; son, Carl Wayne Capps of LaFollette; daughter, Carla Jo Jones of LaFollette; brothers, Virgle Capps, Ivan Capps, and Glen Capps of Williamsburg, Kentucky, and James Capps and Roy Capps of Belton, Texas; sister, Mary Wolfe of Jonesville, Virginia; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 13 at Cross Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Freeman and Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Interment followed Saturday, August 14 in Wells Springs Cemetery.

GRACIE EVELYN HAUN MCNEW, 89, of Cumberland Gap, died August 9 at Middlesboro Appalachian Hospital.

She was preceded in death by husband, Horace McNew; daughter, Ima Jean McNew; son, Louis McNew; mother, Ellen Haun McCreary; sister, Clara Carroll.

Survivors include daughters, Lucille McNew, Jeanette Maddox, and Nela McNew, all of Cumberland Gap; sons, Thomas Elwood McNew of Monroe, Michigan and James Edward McNew of Franklin, Tennessee; sister, Violet Bean of Tazewell; brother, John F. McCreary of Tazewell; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 12 at Coffey Funeral Home in Harrogate with Rev. Ken Cole and Rev. Don Bannister officiating. Interment followed in McNew Cemetery.

DeBUSK, MR. ALFRED JAY, SR. - age 77, of Knoxville, was born February 14, 1922, and passed away August 15, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

He was a World War II Veteran serving in the Army Air Force and was retired from PPG Industries. He professed faith in Christ, was baptized and became a member of Alice Bell Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by grandmother, Nancy Campbell; aunt and uncle, Katherine and Will Campbell, who raised him from an early age; parents, Andrew J. and Hattie Frances Campbell DeBusk; brothers, Woodrow, Robert E., George, Andrew, Jr.; sisters, Mary Jo and Martha Mae.

He is survived by loving wife, Ruth (Minton) DeBusk of Knoxville; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Alfred, Jr. and Sandra DeBusk of Knoxville, Dr. Charles H. and Cindy DeBusk of New Tazewell; grandchildren, Jay, Abby, Will, Bonnie, Kyle and Clark; aunt, Arizella Parker of Middlesboro, Ky.; brothers, John S. DeBusk and Charles Noble DeBusk; sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and William N. Smith, Arizella and Sam Smith; sisters, Ruby DeBusk and Elizabeth Howard; sisters-in-law, Betty DeBusk of Knoxville, Ethel DeBusk of Tazewell; and several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 1999, at the Claiborne Funeral Home with funeral service to follow at 7:30 p.m. in the Claiborne Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Parker officiating. Music by Janice Derreberry. Graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 18, 1999, in the Irish Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Pallbearers: nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Tazewell United Methodist Church and/or the Fountain City United Methodist Church of Knoxville. Claiborne Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

COLLINS, PARIS - age 84, of Powell, formerly of Claiborne County, was born Sept. 30, 1914, passed away on Aug.16, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was a member of Harrogate United Methodist Church and was employed by Lincoln Memorial University for 28 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; eight brothers and two sisters.

Survived by son, David Collins of Atlanta, Ga.; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, Coffey Funeral Home Chapel. Harrogate Cemetery. Receiving friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Coffey Funeral Home in Tazewell, Tenn., Rev. Ray Pen officiating. Pallbearers: Gary Peters, Bruce Peters, Conda Collins, Corum Collins, Raymond Collins, Clint Sulfridge, Jr. Coffey Funeral Home in charge.
