Currently, there are seven pandas in American zoos. Shi Shi, Bai Yun, and Hua Mei are living at the San Diego Zoo, California. Hua Mei is a one year old baby panda born at the zoo. There is also a pair of pandas at Zoo Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia. The last pair to arrive in America are Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. These new additions to Our Smithsonian National Zoo (Washington, D.C.) arrived on December 6, 2000.
There are also about 110 giant pandas in captivity, mostly in China. As China has increasing success with breeding pandas in captivity, they hope that returning them to the wild will supplement the existing wild population.
