Basic Moon Lesson Full Moon The Basic Moon Lesson

The Basics

1. Read a story that is about, or has a central figure, the Moon.
2. Go outside and see if you can find the Moon in the Sky.
3. Create a picture of the Moon in Her current phase.

The Specifics

There are a number of really wonderful books about the Moon. Not many Pagan ones, but we take what we can get at this point. You can find a listing of our favorite books on the Links and Resources section. Talk with your child about what the Moon is doing in the story. Is She watching someone? Playing? Hiding? What's going on? What are the other characters in the story doing with/about/to the Moon? Have we ever done that? Ask questions! Get you child involved.

If the weather permits, go out side and see who can find the Moon. If you child doesn't find Her, point out Her location. Describe or ask you child to describe what She looks like. What color is She? What is Her shape? Is She hidden? By what? Is it day or night? Sometimes the Moon is out during the day, remember.

Once you child is ready to go back in (or to come away from the window), create some project that shows the Moon in her current phase. For the littlest children, coloring book style pictures work well. Don't worry if they don't stay in the lines. Remember, this is your child's project, not yours. I can't keep my fingers out of Dink's "work", so I've had to make extra for me to do. She thinks is great for Mom to color with her. Vary the activities- Use paint sometimes, markers or crayons another. Messy as it is modeling clay is a real hit. Make it fun and you kids will love it! Make it school and you'll have zero fun and loads of headaches. Remember, while you're doing this be talking about the story and about what you saw outside. Try to tie it all together for your child.
