The Empire of Treene
 |
Treene is one of the two largest continents on the Planet
Gondar. It is a vast land mass divided into three huge areas by two enormous
mountain ranges; the Ishar Mountains to the north and the Gladsheel Mountains
to the south.
North of the Ishar mountains the land is covered with enormous forests
but along the more temperate coast there are farms and fishing villages,
towns and cities. South of the Gladsheel Mountains the land is elevate
and, notwithstanding its proximity to the equator, the climate here is
temperate. The area is made up of wide flat expansive plains and grasslands. |
In between the Ishar Mountains and the Gladsheel Mountains the land
is generally covered with rain forest; the only major exceptions being
the huge expanse of the Holjard Desert and the area to the east of it which
have been cleared and settled. It is in the area to the east of the Desert
where most of the population of Treene reside and where the Imperial capital
Rhydall is located.
The Empire has existed for a thousand years. It has complete control
over the continent with a huge army and huge resources at its disposal.
Evil humanoid races and most monsters were wiped out many many years ago.
Its population is mainly human (70%) but there are other races (Dwarves
10%, Elves 10%, Halflings 5%, Gnomes 5%).
The Empire is divided into 14 Provinces. Each Province is ruled by an
Overseer appointed by the Emperor himself. Each Overseer is guided by a
provincial senate made up of senators elected by the general population
of the Province. The present Emperor, Emperor Ylor III, has been in power
for 30 years and is a popular ruler. there are doubts, however, about the
suitability of his eldest son, Flad, who is the heir to the Throne.
The Empire considers itself to be highly cultured and enlightened. It
is however very insular. The people of other countries are viewed with
condescension and suspicion. The Empire has little to do with the nations
of other lands. For this reason, whilst the Empire has outlawed execution
as a punishment for wrong doing, the sentence of transportation is considered
to be a grievous penalty.
Religion is practised only by a minority of the population. The churches
have very little material wealth and even less political power. Clerics,
priests and monks are viewed as odd by the general population for whom
science, art and commerce represent the true way. |
