Raasay Heritage Trust

map.GIF (5593 bytes)The Island of Raasay is located off the east coast of the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Inner Hebrides.

Raasay Heritage Society was formed to preserve and promote the language and culture of the island for future generations and to show visitors all aspects of the island's unique past and its unusual geological and botanical features.

In 1994, with the backing of the local enterprise company, the society became a charitable trust.

Aims

To generate- an interest in and knowledge of the Gaelic language, literature and culture.

To foster- an interest in archaeology, botany, zoology, history, ornithology, geology and other cognate subjects with references to Raasay.

To secure- the preservation of artifacts and sites on Raasay.

To promote- and organise educational exhibitions, conferences, lectures and tours.

The trust has a museum that displays artifacts, offers information of local archaeological sites as well as reference and record books.

The trust also holds local genealogy information and can help trace Raasay ancestors free of charge.

Events & Workshops

Feis Ratharsaidh- an annual event that gives children an opportunity to come together to experience and enjoy traditional music, song and dance skills.

MacLeod Parliament- this was held in 1994 and 1998 and included the previous Chief of MacLeod's of Raasay, Torquil Roderick.  The MacLeod  Parliament visited again on 5th August 2002 and a new chief was "crowned". The new Chief is John Macleod who resides in Tasmania.

Guided walks- gentle and moderate walks via places of historical interest, taking in local history and wildlife.
