The Truth is out There
SYNOPSIS
Mulder and Krycek are assigned to a hostage negotiation in which they are briefed by Agent Lucy Kazdin who explains that a mental patient named Duane Barry has taken his psychologist, Dr. Hakkie, and three other people hostage at a travel agency. Barry demands safe passage for himself and Hakkie to an alien abduction site - although he cannot remember where the site is. Mulder, taking up the case, phones Duane and tries calming him. It soon becomes apparent that Duane is well acquainted with hostage crises. Kazdin explains that he is a former FBI agent. Suddenly, a bright light envelopes the scene. Duane becomes unglued and fires his gun, wounding some of the hostages. Kazdin explains that a power generator blew, but Mulder suspects otherwise. Mulder and another agent volunteer to aid the wounded. They are equipped with a jacket and a wire and as the other agent tends to an injured man, Mulder speaks with Duane in person for the first time. He strays from the FBI script and talks about UFOs candidly. Duane is taken aback; it’s the first time someone given credence to his past experiences. After Mulder tells him of Samantha, he states that the alien are in league with the government and that they take women, men, and children alike. Duane also informs Mulder that he has alien implants in his nasal cavities, above his naval, and in his neck. The alien have also drilled holes in his teeth. The government also seems to have technology which permits them to read minds and / or communicate psychically. This technology was most likely given to them by the Colonists so that they could stage the abductions. He allows Mulder to trade himself for one of the hostages. As Mulder walks Duane through his UFO encounters, the FBI agents listen in, convinced that Duane is being driven over the edge. When Scully arrives, she is given an update of the situation, and she urges the FBI to get Mulder out immediately. She explains that in 1982, Duane Barry was shot in the line of duty. The injury effectively destroyed the moral center of his brain, leaving him a pathological liar who suffers from severe delusions. Scully speaks to Mulder via the hidden two-way receiver wired to his body and she urges him to get the hostages away from Duane. Duane concedes to Mulder’s request and releases the remaining hostages. Soon after that an FBI marksman shoots Duane, but only injures him. Duane is rushed to a hospital where he has the alleged implants removed and he is healed. Kazdin informs Mulder that the x-rays revealed the strange pieces of metal inside Duane’s nasal cavity, lending credence to the man’s claim that he was kidnapped and tortured by aliens. The holes which he said were drilled in his teeth are found to be true, but they could not possibly be done with today’s dentistry tools. Scully later discovers that the metal is encoded with strange symbols. Later, Duane Barry escapes from his hospital room and, without warning, he bursts into Scully’s apartment and attacks her. She is kidnapped and taken to Skyland Mountain - the place of Duane Barry’s abductions. To be continued ...
MY THOUGHTS
Wow This the first part of the best three episode in the second season. The special effects are absolutely amazing. I found it chilling and I got a shock when Duane Barry was at Scully's window at the end. This is about as good as it get in X-file land...
