Chapter 6
"Dear Nicole: Davy and I are getting married on September 1st. You will find an enclosed announcement for the D-Day. I would like you to be my maid of honor. You're my best friend. I know that Micky will be there, but I hope you got over him enough to stand his presence, without feeling upset. I surely hope you do accept my invitation. Please answer as soon as possible. Love, Your friend forever, Allison xox
Nicole reread the letter. She was sitting in the garden of a beautiful country house where she had room and board, since she left her hometown. She had wanted to leave her familiar surroundings in order to forget Micky as soon as possible. Living in the country had been good for her. She had always loved nature. Here, she could appreciate the flowers in bloom in the spring, the gold of wheat fields in the summer, the beauty of red, gold and copper leaves in the fall, and the white snowy fields as far as the eye could see in the winter. She had found a room in a beautiful old cottage owned by Mrs. Sophia Chapman, who was like a mother to her boarder, which Nicole appreciated since she had lost her parents in an accident two years ago. She also found work as a secretary in village clinic. She was finishing her studies by correspondence. Her life was peaceful and she was serene, if not completely happy. Nicole decided that she would accept Allison's invitation to her wedding. She would be happy to be her best friend's maid of honor. The thought of seeing Micky made her heart beat faster, but she was a big girl and she had to face her problems, instead of always escaping them. So, after supper, she answered Allison's letter and mailed it the next morning on her way to work.
