Chapter 4
Summer came. Davy came back as he had promised. He told Allison some good news. He had a one-month vacation and he would spend it with her. Meanwhile, The Monkees would record an album with RCA Victor in Canada. Allison was so happy: they would be together for all summer. They went out every night. They often asked Nicole to accompany them to restaurants, shows, etc., but Nicole would always decline the invitation. She wanted to leave the young couple alone. Besides, she didn't feel like seeing two people in love. She was happy for Allison and Davy but she needed some time alone.
There was a small beach near her hometown where she liked to go to sunbathe. She chose an isolated spot, spread out a beach towel on the sand, applied some sunscreen on her skin, lay down and closed her eyes. She cleared her spirit of all thoughts and relaxed, listening to the waves crashing on the shore and the seagulls' cries.
One afternoon, shortly after lunch, she decided to go to the beach. She lay down and closed her eyes, enjoying the warmth of the sun on her skin. Suddenly, she felt a dark shadow behind her closed eyelids. She thought it was simply a cloud hiding the sun for a few seconds. But as it didn't move, she opened her eyes and nearly gasped with surprise: MICKY WAS THERE! Thinking she was dreaming, Nicole closed her eyes then opened them again, but the smiling apparition was still there.
- Micky!
- Hi, baby!
He had been contemplating her for a few minutes. Under the sun, her curly hair looked like glittering gold, her tanned skin was shining and she had more freckles on her cheeks and shoulders. When she had opened her eyes, he thought: "I didn't remember her eyes were that blue... and that beautiful!" He couldn't resist running an appreciative look on the well-shaped body her little red bikini revealed. Nicole looked at him, too. The wind was softly blowing his dark hair, his almond-shaped eyes were as beautiful as she remembered, and he had that sexy smile that made her melt. His skin was golden-tanned. He wore a black swimsuit. He was breathtakingly attractive. He asked:
- May I sit with you?
- Sure.
He spread the beach towel he had brought with him. He sat down next to her. They didn't speak for a while, then Nicole said:
- I didn't know you were coming here. When did you arrive?
- Last night. Davy said he was coming to see Allison and I wanted very much to see you again. So, here I am!
Nicole hadn't dared dream of those words: "I wanted to see you again". She looked at Micky and said:
- I thought you had forgotten me!
- You're not that easy to forget!
They stared at each other. The next moment, she was in his arms. He bent his head to her face and kissed her. She put her arms around his neck, closed her eyes and answered his kiss passionately. They spent the rest of the afternoon on the beack, talking, kissing and enjoying each other's company. When the sun began to set, Micky asked Nicole:
- Would you care to have dinner with me?
Nicole heard a bell ringing in her head. Dinner, then maybe a party or a show, and then... Would he ask her to make love, then go back home and forget her for a beauty queen or a cute actress? Why would he act with her differently than the way he did with more attractive women? She was afraid to say yes, she didn't want to say no. Micky insisted:
- Nicole! Where are you?
- Oh! Sorry... Yes, dinner. And then?
- Well, as you wish. We could go dancing or walk on the beach or go to a movie. Whatever you want. Or we could do the three: movie, dancing, walking.
- And... then?
- What do you mean?
Nicole took a deep breath. She would look naive compared to the daring women he usually went out with. But she wanted to be true to herself.
- Micky, I heard that usually, you and your dates end up in bed. I don't want to sound like a puritan, but if you expect me to make love with you, tonight, I think you'd better know I don't believe in one-night stands.
- Nicole, the girls with whom I've gone to be with were voluntary. I've never raped anyone.
- But maybe, you'll find the evening dull and you'll think I'm boring...
- Do you think I'm a sex maniac? Besides, it would be nice to date the old-fashioned way.
Micky bit his lips. He quickly went on:
- Sorry! That's not what I meant. I respect your values.
- O.K. I just wanted to know where I stand. Now, if you still want me to go out with you, tonight, the answer is yes. If you don't I'll understand.
- Be ready at 7:30
They stood up, brushed off the sand they had on their feet, folded their beach- towels and Micky accompanied her to her door.
- See you later, honey!
