Chapter 8
The next morning, Micky got up early. He quickly dressed, had an orange juice for breakfast, then drove to the hospital.
When he got in Rebecca's room, he saw a woman of about 45 years old with her. She was talking softly, with what seemed affection, but Rebecca was looking at her with fear in her eyes. Micky came by her bed, and kissed her cheek:
- Good morning. Will you introduce me?
- This is my stepmother.
Micky's smile disappeared instantly and he stared at the woman with cold eyes.
- What are you doing here?
- Young man, that's not a way to talk! Rebecca is under my responsibility, and I have every right to...
- You have no right at all! Not anymore! Rebecca is my wife, now.
Rebecca looked at him with surprise, but he shot her a glance that said: "Please! Not a word!"
- She has no right to marry without my consent. She's a minor! I'll get a lawyer!
- Oh! Be my guest! When MY lawyer will have finished with you and your gigolo, who will spend the rest of his life in jail, you will have nothing left but your eyes to cry.
Edith shot a mortal glance at Micky and left the room, but not without saying:
- You haven't seen the end of it!
Rebecca shivered and told Micky:
- Maybe you shouldn't have provoked her!
- This kind of person only attacks people without defense. The only thing I had to do was to stand up to her... By the way, this is a good idea!
- What?
- You being my wife! Becky, I love you, will you marry me?
- Micky, I...
- Do you love me?
- I love you so much, it's almost painful! But... I'm a minor.
- When is your birthday?
- September 10.
- That's in 20 days. Just enough time for me to plan a small ceremony, and for you to heal. By the way, I will ask the nurses that nobody but Davy, Mike, Peter and myself are allowed in your room. Unless... you have other friends or family?
- Only my grandparents.
- Where were they during all those years?
- Edith managed so that I didn't see them often. And when I did, she was always there and before, she lectured me that if I was complaining to them about her, I would be very sorry. I was afraid, so I never told anything...
- O.K. So grandpa and grandma will be allowed here, too. But that's it! Now, I've gotta go, darling. I have a wedding to prepare.
He winked at her, kissed her and went out.
