Chapter 9
Rebecca got out of the hospital the day before her wedding. On September 10, Micky and Rebecca got married in a small chapel. Unfortunately, Davy was absent, being in England for a marriage in his family. Peter was Micky's best man and Mike was Rebecca's witness. After a short reception, the young couple went away for a week.
When they were at the motel, Micky took his wife in his arms and kissed her. But when he tenderly began to undress her, she shivered and gently pushed him away. Micky frowned:
- What's wrong, Becky?
- I... I'm a little tired.
- I'm sorry. I forgot you just got out of the hospital. (He was deceived, but hid it).
They went to bed and slept.
The morning after, Rebecca complained she had a headache. Once again, Micky showed comprehension, but he thought that was not the idea he had of a honeymoon.
The days went by and each time Micky wanted to make love with her, she had a lame excuse to refuse him. On the last day of their honeymoon, Micky lost patience:
- Damn it!
- I'm sorry. I'm just... afraid. After what Vince did to me...
- Rebecca, I am NOT Vince. I AM MICKY! I'm your husband and I love you. I don't want to molest you, I just want to love you.
- I know... I love you, too, but I'm afraid...I can't help it!
She was crying. Micky didn't know what to say. He sincerely loved Rebecca and he wanted to be understanding, but he was not ready to accept an unconsummated marriage.
Rebecca spoke again:
- We should ask an invalidation of our marriage. Then, you would be free to marry a normal woman.
- Rebecca, is that what you want?
- It's not what I want, it's what we have to do. I love you, and because of that, I don't want you to be deprived of the normal joy of love. I, myself, cannot give it to you...
She sobbed painfully.
- Darling, there's another solution; since your young age, you have passed through terrible ordeals. You should see a psychiatrist. If you promise to do everything you can to get cured, I promise I will wait for you.
EPILOGUE
Rebecca has consulted a good psychiatrist who helped her mind to get rid of the wounds of the past. One of the most wonderful days of Rebecca and Micky's life was when she invited him over to a picnic and then to the same motel they had rented for their honeymoon, but this time, Rebecca became his wife, for real. The other most wonderful day of their life was when she gave birth to their first son, Nathan, named after Rebecca's late father.
Vince has been judged and convicted of assault and attempt of rape. He is still in prison. As for Edith, she goes from one lover to another. She's never happy because she knows only how to take but not how to give.
The Monkees are very successful; Rebecca is their biggest fan. Her favorite one, of course, is Micky whom she loves with her heart, soul and body.
And, like in all fairy tales, they lived happily ever after!
