The Declaration of Independence says that all men are created equal. This idea is what America is founded upon. However, not all people have always been treated equally. For over 200 years, African-Americans suffered through slavery. With the EmancipationProclaimation, which was signed in 1862, slaves were given their freedom. However, the fight for equality was only beginning for African-Americans. Between 1950 and 1968, African-Americans fought for basics civil rights such as attending the same school as white children, eating in any restaurant and the right to vote. In this unit, we will look at some of the important people and events which took place during this time .
