THE TRANSFORMERS, ETC.

Back in the 80's. I remember as a kid being a huge fan of cartoons like the Thundercats, He-Man, Mask, Voltron, Robotech, and especially the Transformers. I remember coming home from school anxiously awaiting for the cartoon shows to start. Then doing my homework in between the commercials. I remember wanting Optimus Prime, Metroplex, and a bunch of the others but not being able to afford them. As the years passed on, I eventually forgot about the toys. Not until my third year in college and a chance encounter with a local dealer did things change. There on display beside some other toys, was an Optimus Prime, just like when I was little. It brought back memories.

I bought Old Optimus that day in addition to a Prowl. Fairly cheap too compared to how much it would cost to buy them now. After that day, there grew a mad desire within me to go back and collect all those toys I so much wanted when I was younger. Soon I would be either down at the local thrift shops sifting through the bins for any new finds, or at garage sales, or attending the occasional collectors' fair. The highlight of which was the 1998 Botcon in Anaheim, Ca. Wish I could have got my picture taken with that guy who dressed up as an Autobot......or was he a Decepticon? It has been almost four years since I got that very first Optimus Prime. And I am happy to say that I've been able to build a really nice collection of toys. (heh heh)

Though I've been a collector for a good many years. I have only recently begun dealing on the Internet. Still. From my own experiences and that of others, I've been able to build a sort of philosophy for dealing on the Net.

1st and foremost. Play it smart. Be cautious in your dealings. Try to deal with those that have been in the business for a long time and have built up good reputations. If you're dealing with a newcomer, have them send first. Wait until you receive their package before you send yours. I know this might sound unfair. But my feeling is that if they're not willing to do this, you're better off not dealing with the person unless you can stand to lose your stuff.

2nd. Take the time to find out more about the person you're dealing with. Ask others what they know about him or her. In any case, always make sure you get plenty of personal references.

3rd. I know there are alot of fanatics out there willing to sell their soul for some of these toys. But you gotta remember. THEY'RE ONLY TOYS. No matter what the voices in your head say.

The 4th is somewhat a continuation of the 3rd. For me, one of the most enjoyable parts about collecting are those occasions when you get your hands on that rare find. You've heard of them. "My friend Joe picked up a complete Fort Max for only $20 at the local flea market!" Stuff like that. My advice is to have patience and wait for those good deals to come along. No matter what they say about this stuff being rare and hard to find.

Well. That's it folks! Hopefully, you won't get screwed. Hopefully.
