1971 Dodge Challenger T/A????

In the Fall of 1970 Dodge planned to build a 1971 Challenger T/A! As a matter of fact a guy named Larry Henry (who worked for Mopar Performance at the time)saw a few of the 1971 T/A's on a holding lot at the Hamtramck plant! Dodge eventually backed out of racing and decided not to offer the T/A model in 1971. The 1970 T/A's had 340 6-Pack engines. The 1971 T/A's were suppose to have 340 4-barrel engines. A brochure was actully made for the 1971 T/A but it was the same brochure from 1970. The only thing they changed on the brochure was the grille of the Challenger (they just air-brushed a 1971 Challenger grille on the photo).

Some people think that Larry Henry was mistaken by the car. He didn't see a 1971 T/A or was mistaken by an R/T. I think Larry's story is legit. There's no way you could mistake an R/T for a T/A! My dad worked at General Motors for more than 30 years and he told me about all kinds of models that were made that never came out. After they made a car that never would come out, they would bring the car back to the factory specs. Car companys do it all the time!

I think Chrysler made a few legit 1971 T/A's but they were never sold to the public. If all of this information is true, The T/A's that were built were converted back into 340 Challengers and sold.

If you want to find out if your 1971 Challenger might be a legit T/A I would check for an extra hole on the inner fender panel. If you have this hole, your car might of had an additional T/A fender tag. Check for any T/A codes on the steering box (for the quicker-ratio steering box). Challenger T/A's had rear wings on there decklids, The factory might of filled the holes for the wing. T/A's also had the radio antenna on the right rear fender, The factory might of filled the hole where the antenna is suppose to be. If your car has all the stuff I mentioned above, You might have a legit 1971 T/A that was converted back to the car you own right now!
