  • Course requirements, introduction to the concept of management information systems, the purpose of information systems, and the various types of information systems will be discussed.

Hyperlinks for Week 1: Check out CNET to obtain current technology information and for downloading business shareware software, try Outpost.com to find a "software product" for your Product Assessment Project Report, and to get that Dell Dimension 3000, Pentium 4, 2.80GHz, 533MHz FSB (bus), 1GB DDR SDRAM, with a nice size hard drive and a DVD+RW, and a 17" flat panel display, plus much more for under $1100, it's "Easy as Dell". If you are looking for a free web based e-mail account you might want to try Hotmail, and if you are having a little trouble understanding some of those fancy computer terms try PC Webopaedia. And for way cool web sites try AltaVista Translations and yourDictionary.com. Also, for your reading pleasure here is a link to a recent article that I wrote titled READY, SET, LAUNCH. And here are a couple of sites for student discounted software, Academic Superstore and JourneyEd.com. I also like AtomicPark.com but there prices are a little higher.

Hyperlinks for Week 2: The two primary NOSs in use for LANs are Novell NetWare 6.5 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. For a really great HTML (HyperText Markup Language) hands-on tutorial try Introduction to HTML. Also, check these three web sites out for some way cool web page graphics including ones that are animated--Bellsnwhistles.com and Animation Factory. Also, SiliconValley.com (San Jose Mercury News) is a great site for "current events" technology information.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please remember to include a subject line and a message in all e-mail that you send Dr. Olivas. For the subject line you might say something like "HTM 304 Excel work" and in the message you might say "Hey Dr. Olivas attached you will find Excel Excercises 16 and 22. Enjoy! Tiger Woods, Section 03." Also, ALL files must include a Custom Footer with your name, the Excel Exercise number, and your section number. In addition, you will need to include your name in the Author field of the Excel Properties and your e-mail address in the Hyperlink base field of the Excel Properties for each file that you send. • WEEK 3: Week of January 31.
  • Continue with Technology Guide 4 of the course text Network and Telecommunications Basics and cover all of Chapter 4 Network Computing. Emphasis will be on Network Processing Strategies and Telecommunications Applications. Current News Article (1) due second class meeting of the week. Perform Common Tasks using Excel 2002 (Exercises 17-22 from the Excel course text, Lesson 4). Also, continue use of the Internet for e-commerce purposes and continue with your e-commerce web site project.

Hyperlinks for Week 3: Summarizing what I discussed (will be discussing) in class regarding networking speed. For wide area network connections you have two basic options: dial-up and direct. Dial-up connections are either analog or digital. For analog connections a modem is used with a maximum speed of 56Kbps using 1 channel. ISDN often uses a dial-up connection with digital transmission achieving speeds of up to 128Kbps using 2 channels. For direct connections you basically have T1, T3, or ATM. All of these direct connections allow for broadband transmission with T1 achieving speeds of 1.5Mbps using 24 channels, T3 achieving speeds of 4.5Mbps using hundreds of channels, and ATM achieving speeds up to 622Mbps using a single fixed channel between two points. Fractional T1, with 12 channels at 1.5Mbps, can be a cost effective way to go for small to medium size businesses. For businesses, ISDN is becoming less of a player while home and business cable connections (through local TV cable companies) is showing great promise. Cable can achieve speeds up to 8Mbps (averaging about 1.5Mbps) with one cable handling up to 8 channels. Another method for communicating in wide area network environments is ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). ADSL (usually referred to as simply DSL) allows for speeds up to 8Mbps (averaging less than 256Kbps). The biggest advantage to ADSL is that it uses normal copper telephone lines. Check out the Bandwidth Meter to find out what your actual line speed is and to get all kinds of other interesting information regarding bandwidth. Also, try BroadBand Reports.com to test the speed of your connection. This test shows you both upload and download speeds. From the BroadBand Reports.com home page click on Tests+Tools, Speed Tests, select one of the servers, click once on the Start button, then wait for the cool graph to come up.

Here are a few more Hyperlinks for Week 3: I really like Angelfire for free web page hosting for both your E-Commerce Lab class web site and your Software Product Assessment Lecture class web site but there are a whole lot of other places that will host your web sites including CollegeClub and YAHOO!GeoCities. Hey here is a cool site for people who like TV like me--TV Guide Online.

  • WEEK 4: Week of February 7.
  • Technology Guide 5 of the course text The Internet Basics will be covered. Emphasis will be on what the Internet is and how it operates. Print a Worksheet using Excel 2002 (Excercises 23-26 from the Excel couse text, Lesson 5). Also, continue use of the Internet for e-commerce purposes and continue with your e-commerce web site project.

Hyperlinks for Week 4: ZDNet is a power packed web site with a massive amount of information including some great links for buying hardware and software. Another great web site that is directed primarily at selling hardware and software is CDW. Want to experience what Dr. Olivas considers a standard or typical web portal? Have a look at About.com. Get your very own web address at NETWORK SOLUTIONS, or at least start to look into how to get your very own web address. Try PeopleSearch.net and Starting Page. Is this stuff legal? Worried about the speed of your Internet connection like me? Use "ping" and "tracert" to find out how you are doing. For "ping" less than 200ms round trip is best and for "tracert" no more than 10 hops is best. You can use these through Windows but I looked on CNET DOWNLOAD.COM and found some interesting "ping" and "tracert" utilities that are far better than what Windows has to offer. The Ping Plotter (freeware) is pretty informative. Just search CNET DOWNLOAD.COM for Ping Plotter.

Here are a few more Hyperlinks for Week 4: Okay you are getting all fired up about your E-Commerce Web Site Project and you want to push it a little with some intermediate to advanced level HTML--so, where to go? Try Advanced HTML Tutorials but take it slow and remember you can always copy (Ctrl + c) and paste (Ctrl + v) from a web page or the web page source. Don't forget to stop by and Sign Up for a free place to upload your E-Commerce Web Site and your Product Assessment Project Report?--I like Angelfire.com but there are many, many others such as FortuneCity.

Hyperlinks for Week 5: For a great Internet Language Dictionary go to NetLingo. Also, for a free place to upload your web sites (the Lab E-Commerce site and the Lecture Software Product Assessment site) I am suggestion that you use Angelfire.com.

Here are a few more Hyperlinks for Week 5: Try Dougie's Color Picker to select just the right colors for your e-commerce web site. Want to make your own animated gifs? You can, you can--just go to GIF Construction Set and download a great shareware program to help you create your very own animated gifs. Might want to download this program from CNET DOWNLOAD.COM.

Also, continue use of the Internet for e-commerce purposes and continue with your e-commerce web site project.

Hyperlinks for Week 6: Take a look at what some of the bigger e-commerce "solution" people are doing including Oracle, SAP, Microsoft, and IBM. During your visit you might want to stop by the Employment Office (Page) and perhaps make contact (just backspace off the directory structure in the URL until you are down to the host computer including the .com, Enter once, then look around for employment opportunities). If you have some questions about management information systems security try RAS Security to get your answers. This site has some very informative information regarding current management information systems security. Also, stop by Electronic Frontier Foundation for some great information regarding technology freedom and privacy issues.

Here are a few more Hyperlinks for Week 6: Dr. Olivas says don't run your Browser without these essential software tools: WinZip 9.0 (to unzip and zip files easily), WS_FTP Pro 9.02 (to download and upload files easily), and Paint Shop Pro 9.0 (to do graphic manipulations including converting graphic file types). They can all be downloaded from TUCOWS for free. Actually, the TUCOWS site is pretty neat--have a look.

Here are a few more Hyperlinks for Week 7: There was a question in both the Lab and Lecture portions of the course about spelling on work that is done for this course. I said I was not directily worried it, that I was more worried about analysis and depth and thought. But it is fine for you to be worried about spelling--and if you are try Dictionary.com or yourDictionary.com. Actually, you will find a lot of cool writing stuff on this site.
