Milan
Milan turned out to be much different to the
other cities I managed to visit on this trip. The city centre is not the 'step
back in time' of a Florence, Venice or Siena. There are however, many historic
sites within easy walking distance of il Duomo.
Milan is a modern city, and is Italy's home of
fashion (where yours truly felt most out of place) and commerce. It would also
appear to be the world capitol of graffiti - there is no shortage of artistic
contribution from the contemporary residents of this city.
Slap bang in the middle of 'Milano' is the Piazza (Square). On the far side of the square is one of the entrances to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The Galleria is now a series of trendy shops and cafes that connect the Piazza del Duomo with La Scala (Milan's famous opera house. There is also a mosaic bull on the floor where the tourists place a heel on his genetalia and do a circle for luck! This nearly deserted old square is only 'round the corner from the busy Piazza del Duoma and makes a nice change of pace in the city centre. Il Duomo - or the Cathederal - dates back to the 14th century. It's a bit big to get into a snap hence the 'partial' photos.
