"Oxfordshire, a county of England, 47 miles in length, and 29 in breadth; bounded by Buckinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Warwickshire, and Northamptonshire. It is divided into 14 hundreds, which contain 1 city, 12 market towns, 280 parishes, and 51 villages. The air is sweet, mild, pleasant, and healthy, for which reason it contains several gentlemen's seats; and the soil, though various, is fertile in corn and grass, and the hills are shaded with woods. It is also a great sporting country, there being abundance of game preserved here. It has no manufactures of any account, being chiefly agricultural. Its chief city is Oxford. Population, 161,643. It sends 9 members to parliament."

An Overview:
Reuben, Sr., Elizabeth and three oldest children Thomas V., Walter E. and Amelia E.,  sailed from the Shutford/Banbury area of County Oxfordshire, England, 1853, and settled in Fayette, Iowa by 1857.   Little was known regarding the families in England, until contact was made with Skip Baker and Jim Hunt in late January 2000, and with Peter Wrench in February 2001.  These three Hunt and Wrench contacts have significant information which I will attempt to blend into our pages in the coming months.   Reuben built a stone house when he came to Fayette and lived there until the death of Elizabeth in 1900, when he moved in with his children in Fayette and Hartford, SD, until his death in 1907.  Reuben may have moved from  New York State to work on the college building which was started at Fayette in 1855, about three years after the town started to develop.  Skip Baker indicated Reuben Sr. also worked on the initial  Iowa State College buildings.  The  UIU building was constructed of large limestone blocks and Reuben may have ended the project as one of the Master Stone Masons.   The couple was very much a part of the Fayette community and the Methodist Church during their life in the valley.  Reuben and the boys in the family would be quite active in the Masonic Lodge.  Reuben and Elizabeth raised eight of ten children born.   There is every  indication that the Hunt family and the families of their spouses  were successful,  very hard working pioneer farmers, craftsmen, businessmen, educators in the Fayette valley from the 1850's through 1977.   By the mid 1900's, most of the lines had left the valley, which reflects on the successful 120 years of small farm/ small business history of Fayette.  Thomas V.  would remain  in northeast Iowa as a mason and school teacher, Walter Eugene and Reuben Wrench would remain in Fayette as farmers and businessmen, Amelia would marry and homestead in Hartford, SD., the remainder of Reuben, Sr., and Elizabeth's children  would also migrate to western states in the late 1800's.    The Grandchildren of Reuben, Sr., and Elizabeth would all have left the Fayette Valley except for Walter Reuben Hunt who would marry Winifred Mary Strayer and live their lives in Fayette, and be the last of the Hunt's in Fayette, farming until their deaths in 1977.   One Great Grand Daughter, Eleanor Hunt Zbornik would remain in Fayette for her life.  All GGGrandchildren had left the valley by the 1960's, and thus there are no living relatives of Reuben, Sr., and Elizabeth in Fayette, Iowa.
